Nestled in the historic Government Camp of Francistown, the Supa Ngwao Museum—meaning “to show culture” in Setswana—serves as a vibrant repository of northern Botswana’s rich heritage. Established in 1986 and opening its doors in 1992, the museum offers an immersive journey through the traditions, history, and artistry of the Kalanga people and the broader region.

🏺 Exhibits That Tell a Story

The museum's diverse collection includes:

Traditional Artifacts: Handcrafted items such as pots, cooking utensils, woven baskets, and musical instruments that showcase the daily life and artistry of the Kalanga people.

Historical Displays: Photographs, farming equipment, and other relics that chronicle Francistown's evolution from a mining hub to a modern city.

Haskins Archives: A dedicated section preserving documents and records pivotal to understanding the city's past.

🧵 Supporting Local Artisans

The museum's craft shop is a treasure trove of locally made goods, supporting approximately 200 artisans from the surrounding areas. Visitors can purchase unique items like leather key-holders, woodcarvings, traditional jewelry (dibaga), and palm-woven baskets (ditlatlana), each reflecting the region's rich cultural tapestry.

🚶‍♂️ Explore Francistown's Heritage

Beyond its walls, the Supa Ngwao Museum offers guided walking tours of Francistown, highlighting significant historical sites such as:

Old Jail House: A relic from the colonial era.

Hexagonal Building: An architectural marvel with a storied past.

Miners' Cottage: Situated at the foot of Nyangabgwe Hill, this building harks back to the city's gold mining days.

These tours provide a deeper understanding of Francistown's multifaceted history and its role in Botswana's development.
