Sunset in My Village

It’s been quite hot in our hut
Laba, the dog, laid lazily near the clay pot
Koko, the cat, curled up near the fire
Smokes from the burning timbers dimmed
My eyes, as I made our ornamented soup
Of crayfish spiced veggies and smoked meat
And then came, this radiant tawny flash
Tiptoeing to the doorless entrance of our hut
Oh! And up there in the pregnant blue sky
Was that orange fiery ball, glaring and bright
Struck me with a vortex to stay, to watch
Am I seeing this yolky sphere the first time?
In the sky, there it smiled and then it frowned
Dimming and dazzling till it commenced
A moonlight game that I did not wish to play
I smiled and it frowned, I hid, it sought, it hid
I sought and it hid behind the pile of hides
Then slipped slowly behind the coconut tree
Slowly behind the thatched roofs, the brick huts
Bouncing on the still stream I, on the river bank
Slowly I followed till I could see it no more
Why now my tawny ball, I wish to play
I cried and cried and cried till a stifling smell
A pungent sweet smell brought me to a halt
Eh, my soup, ah eh Mama, our last supper
Nene will kill me today, my stream of fresh tears.
