Started this piece four nights ago, around 2am when insomnia hits hardest. Oil on canvas, about 14 hours spread across three sessions. The fingertips took forever. I wanted that moment right before touch, that electric space where nothing has been said yet but everything is understood.

Red and gold mixing on the wet canvas kept surprising me. The gold bleed where I didn't expect it, creating these tiny rivers between the hands. I had to surrender to it, let the paint do what it wanted. That's always the hardest part for me. I'm a control freak with a brush.

The gap between the hands. That's where the emotion lived. Not the hands themselves. The space between them. I was trying to capture that feeling of wanting to reach out but hesitating. The vulnerability of almost. Medium is student-grade oils because that's what I could afford, but they worked.

Listened to Asa's "Fire on the Mountain" on repeat. Something about that melody kept me grounded.

"the gap between the hands" hit me hard. like that's literally the whole thing isn't it. i've been trying to paint tension for months and never thought to just... paint the space instead. also lol at control freak with a brush — felt that in my soul. does the gold ever do what you want or does it just have a mind of its own?
