Started from zero last year after my laptop died and car repairs hit at the same time. Here's exactly how I saved 3 months of expenses in 10 months working a regular 9-5 in Nairobi.
Step 1: Know your number. For me it was KES 42,000 monthly (rent 15k, food 12k, transport 4k, utilities 3k, misc 8k). Target: KES 126,000.
Step 2: The 50/30/20 split won't cut it at zero. I did 40/30/30 - 40% needs, 30% wants, 30% savings. That meant KES 12,600/month from my 42k salary into emergency fund.
Step 3: Side hustle. I started selling mandazi to my office mates every Friday. Two batches cost me KES 600, sold for KES 1,500. That extra KES 3,600/month went straight to the fund.
Step 4: Cut one subscription. DStv compact (KES 1,990/month) became Zuku basic (KES 890). Saved KES 1,100/month.
Step 5: Automate. Set a standing order to M-Shwari on payday. Out of sight, out of mind.
Step 6: Protect the fund. This is NOT for new shoes or a birthday dinner. Label it "RENT OR STARVE" in your app.
Anecdote: My friend Wambui saved hers in 6 months by negotiating her rent down KES 2,000 and walking to work instead of matatus (saved KES 3,800/month). She said the blisters reminded her why she was saving.
You don't need a raise. You need discipline and one small side hustle.
