In the early hours of 21 February 1917, the SS Mendi, a British troopship carrying members of the South African Native Labour Corps (SANLC), sank off the coast of the Isle of Wight, England. The disaster claimed the lives of over 600 black South African soldiers, many of whom had volunteered to serve in World War I despite being denied full citizenship in their own country. The SS Mendi Memorials across South Africa serve as powerful reminders of their sacrifice and the long-overlooked role of black soldiers in global conflicts.

The Tragedy of the SS Mendi

The SS Mendi was en route to France, carrying 823 troops and crew to support British forces.

In dense fog, the ship was struck by the SS Darro, a much larger vessel, and quickly sank.

Many soldiers, trapped below deck, perished instantly, while others succumbed to the icy waters.

Oral histories tell of Reverend Isaac Wauchope Dyobha, who, in their final moments, led the men in a brave, defiant "death dance" as the ship went down.
