So The Guardian Nigeria asked: what US city has the largest Nigerian population? I don't even need to click the link to know the answer is Houston. But let me tell you, it's not just numbers. I’ve got cousins in Katy and Sugar Land, and they say it’s like a mini Port Harcourt out there. Pepper soup joints on every corner, Nollywood movie nights, and churches that could rival any Harvest in PH.

What struck me though is how many of our people are scattered: Houston, Atlanta, New York, Dallas. Every time I visit family in the US, I bump into someone from Rumuokwuta or Woji. You can’t escape us. But Houston wins because of the oil ties. My uncle who works for Shell says back in the 80s a lot of PH folks relocated to Texas for the same industry. Now whole streets in Alief sound like Mile 1 Market.

I think about the reverse too. How many Nigerians in Houston still call Port Harcourt home? Some send money back to build houses in Ozuoba or buy land in Elelenwo. Others return for Christmas and complain about the traffic on Azikiwe Road. But they still crave boli and fish from Choba. It’s a weird connection.

The article probably lists stats and demographics, but for me it’s about the bridge between here and there. If you’re planning to move or visit family in the US, Houston is your best bet for finding that PH vibe. Just don’t expect the same pothole situation - our roads are a different kind of challenge.
