Beneath the waters off Clifton, Cape Town, lies the wreckage of the São José-Paquete de Africa, a Portuguese slave ship that met its tragic fate in 1794. This ship was en route from Mozambique to Brazil, carrying over 500 enslaved Africans, when it struck submerged rocks near the Cape of Good Hope. The wreck is one of the few known and documented slave shipwrecks in the world, making it a profoundly significant site in global history.

A Tragic Voyage

The São José was part of the transatlantic slave trade, transporting enslaved people from East Africa to the Americas.

On December 27, 1794, the ship crashed into rocks near Cape Town due to strong currents and poor visibility.

More than 200 enslaved people perished, while the surviving captives were recaptured and sold into slavery in the Cape Colony.

The shipwreck was largely forgotten until 2010, when researchers from the Slave Wrecks Project uncovered its remains.

Archaeological Discovery

Artifacts recovered from the site include iron ballast bars (used to weigh down human cargo), shackles, and remnants of the ship’s structure.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., now displays some of these artifacts.

The wreck’s designation as a heritage site ensures it remains protected and accessible for historical research.
