Standing proudly in Kampala, the Sir Edward Mutesa II Monument celebrates the legacy of one of Uganda’s most influential figures—the 35th Kabaka of Buganda and the country’s first president. Mutesa II was a symbol of resilience and leadership, guiding Buganda through colonial challenges and playing a key role in Uganda’s independence.
The bronze statue captures him in military uniform, reflecting his training with the British Grenadier Guards. Originally placed at the Speke Road roundabout, the monument was relocated in 2024 to a prominent triangular space near the Serena and Imperial Royale Hotels, making it easily accessible for visitors and locals.
This monument is not just a tribute to his royal lineage but also to his political impact. Educated in the UK and a champion of Buganda’s autonomy, Mutesa II’s reign witnessed both turmoil and progress, culminating in his presidency after independence in 1962.
If you visit, take time to reflect on Uganda’s complex history and the role Mutesa II played. Nearby, you can also explore the Independence Monument and other historic sites, making this area a rich cultural experience.
