A Nightmare to Behold

“The Grace” Pastor Richard spoke to the microphone and everyone recited the grace of the LORD.

It was mid-week service and when the service closed, we all made our way out of the church.

“Sister Jumi,” I heard brother Mike call me from behind, so I turned to face him.

I had an impatient look on my face because I was trying to meet up with the bus before it left.

“Are you going home straight?” he asked as we walked towards the bus stop.

I tried to walk faster and thankfully he kept up.

“Yes,” I replied and tried to quicken my pace but the heavy bag I brought with me from the market weighed me down. “I’m trying to get to the bus stop before the bus leaves,” I told him.

“Oh, that’s true. The way to your house is very dangerous at night,” he stretched his hand to me “Let me help you with the bag so we can meet up on time,” he said.

I was grateful and handed him the bag.

We walked to the bus stop in silence. We were three blocks away from the bus stop when we spotted the bus preparing to leave.

I and Brother Mike quickened our pace and then proceeded to run while we yelled for the bus to wait, but it had already driven off by the time we reached the bus stop.

In annoyance, I hissed and groaned.

“Shey he did not see us waving for him to stop?” I hissed again and looked at Brother Mike with an annoyed expression on my face.

“Don’t worry, another will come” he smiled, an attempt to calm me down.

“But that will be in about an hour” I checked the time on my watch.

“I’ll wait with you, don’t worry” The smile still stayed on his lips.

I shook my head “Don’t bother, brother Mike, I can handle myself” I smiled.

“It’s dangerous for you to stay here alone,” he said, worry in his tone.

I chuckled and shook my head.

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry” I nod.

He was going to protest when a car parked in front of us. It was Femi, his neighbor who asked if he was going now. Brother Mike looked at me and I smiled.

“Go, I’ll be fine” I urged him then looked around to see a couple walking towards the bus stop hand-in-hand.

“I can’t leave you here alone” he protested.

“Well, I’m not alone,” I told him. He was reluctant to leave but I assured him that GOD is with me and he will look over me, then he left with his neighbor.

The couple sat on the bench when they got to the bus stop and I felt relieved because I wasn’t alone there. And GOD is with me too.

I would have followed them but Femi creeps me out. He has tried to force himself on me in the past but I escaped that horror and left a scar on his stupid face.

We didn’t talk about it till this date and just pretended not to know each other when we saw each other.

I couldn’t understand why I suddenly felt uneasy but I tried to brush it off by humming my favorite Christian music.

The feeling persisted and I felt the need to leave that place, so I did. I walked away from the bus stop and glanced at the happy couple for a second then continued walking.

When I got further from the bus stop, I passed an alley and then stopped.

A muffled sound halted me in my step and I turned around to check. Normally, I wouldn’t try that because it’s night and no one is around to call for help if something bad is happening.

I peeped and saw someone on the floor. The person looked like he/she was in pain. I was concerned and wanted to move to meet the person but stopped when I saw three men in dark clothing coming out of what looked like a back door and getting closer to the injured person.

The person weakly pleaded for his life and for mercy but they laughed at him and called him pathetic.

I was going to dial the emergency number but froze when I heard a familiar voice.

“Next time, you will do as you are told,” the voice said then he took the gun handed to him by the guy close to him, cocked it, and let out an evil laugh.

“Pastor Richard, please” the injured person weakly begged.

“Enjoy your stay in hell” he laughed and the gun went off, echoing in the air and deafening my ears.

I didn’t need any other proof to know it was Pastor Richard who just killed someone in a dark alley like the person’s life meant nothing.
