Hiroyuki Sanada as Yoshii Toranaga gave us a performance so layered and restrained that every silence contained more information than most actors deliver in dialogue. You spend the entire season trying to read him and the show rewards your patience in the final episodes in ways that physically alter your breathing.

What the show understood that so many historical dramas miss is that political maneuvering is more terrifying than combat. Toranaga never raises his voice. He never needs to.

The FX production design should be illegal. Feudal Japan was recreated with such specificity and respect that you forget you are watching a 2024 production.

Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko. Remember that name. She carried the emotional weight of this entire series and made it look effortless.

10 episodes. Every one earns its runtime.

Rating: 10/10. Television does not get better than this.
