She sat for me for two hours and never once looked at her phone.
I asked her to think about the last time she felt completely safe. Her face changed three times before it settled. That third expression is the one I painted. The one between remembering and letting go.
Oil on canvas. 30 x 40. I used a palette knife for the background because I wanted the texture to feel like the noise around her, while her face stayed smooth and still. The contrast is the whole painting.
Portraits are not about what people look like. They are about what people carry.

wow. that part about her face changing three times and you painting the one between remembering and letting go... that hit me. i feel like i've seen that expression before but never had words for it. also love that you kept her face smooth and let the background be chaotic. that really is what it feels like sometimes - trying to hold still while everything around you is loud. do you ever show the other expressions too or just the final one? 9 days ago
