Shaka was born in 1787. His father, Senzangakhona, was a minor chief of one of the Zulu-speaking clans and his mother, Nandi, was daughter of Chief Mbhengi of the rival clan. Shaka's birth was considered a sin because his parents were from different clans.
Shaka’s parents’ marriage violated Zulu custom, and the stigma of this extended to the child. The couple separated when Shaka was six, and his mother took Shaka back to her clan, where he passed a fatherless boyhood among a people who despised his mother.
The Zulu tribe cannot be discussed without analyzing their most prominent and prolific leader, Shaka Zulu. The way he ruled over the Zulu people as king had reverberations that echoed for generations not only through out the Zulu tribe, but also the neighbouring tribes and the whole region. While Shaka Zulu is often portrayed as a bloodthirsty barbarian, there is more complexity to his character than meets the eye. While his actions may not be justifiable, they can be examined and explained as the surprisingly complex character of Shaka Zulu is unraveled.
After Shaka made erratic decisions that led to the deaths of thousands, he was assassinated by a group of associates that included two of his half brothers, Dingane and Mhlangana, in September 1828.
You might be wondering why this man wasn't known as a massive murderer but as a hero, well, that's because he was a great king who conquered several lands, fought and won many battles. Protected his people, fought for them, defended them.
