Maverick grabs her neck and the struggle begin. She starts struggling, slapping and scratching him with her nails. Annabelle jumps to her feet, runs over to them and start hitting Maverick on his back. He uses his other hand to push her away while he continues choking Talia.
“Maverick, please stop it. Ashley is in the other room and she can come in here any moment. Stop it.” I yell. But he doesn’t listen. Talia isn’t going to let this go. She is going to get her boyfriend who is in a gang and they are going to retaliate. Maverick is as good as dead. She knees him in the groin and fall to the floor coughing. Her eyes are very red and I rush to the kitchen to get water for her. Tears fall from my eyes. How did my life get to this? Talia was right. Maverick wouldn’t hesitate to hurt me if given the chance.
“Talia, I am so sorry.” I say feeding her the bottle of water. After she gulps the entire bottle, she stands up, smiling at Maverick then grab her bag and walks out the door. That isn’t a good smile. Annabelle mouths a ‘talk later’ then runs after her.
Why am I so dumb? Why do I keep picking the wrong men who treats me like trash? I just hope Maverick won’t be the death of me.
“I do not want to ever see those bitches in my house again or close to my daughter. Do you hear me?” he yells at me. I don’t answer him, instead I start picking up Ashley’s toys from the carpet. I am sick and tired of this bullshit. “Do you not hear me speaking to you, Crystal?” he yells again. I still don’t respond. Before I could blink my eye, this nigga slaps me across the face. I clutch my face in shock.
“What the fuck is wrong with you? How dare you put your hands on me? Have you gone insane?”
“You haven’t seen anything yet, baby doll.”
Next thing I know, he is whipping me all over my body with his belt. I don’t even know when he unhooked it from his waist. The leather bites my skin, leaving traces of blood in its wake. He flogs me over and over yelling, “You think you and your stupid bitches can disrespect me? I will teach you how to respect me.”
“Please stop.” I beg in tears over and over until I can’t hear myself anymore. The only thing on my mind is a plea to heaven that my daughter doesn’t come out and see her mother being brutalized by her father. That would scar her for life.
“Go grab Ashley.” I hear a voice say. That sounds like Talia but I’m not sure. It is so difficult to keep my eyes open. They hurt so much.
“Don’t tell me you came back for another round of choking. You like it when I choke you, don’t you? Tell me how much you like it, you dirty little slut.” Maverick says. That means Talia came back. She came back for me.
She chuckles. That is her deadly chuckle. “Look at the face of the dirty little slut who sends you to hades. Go to hell, bitch.” I hear gunshot. Someone fired a gun. It’s so loud it deafens me. I’m about to collapse when I hear Talia scream, “Tell them it is self-defense.” Then I black out.
It’s been three weeks after the incident and I’m at my sister’s house. I just got out of the hospital, and I start therapy tomorrow. The judge mandated me to do so. Ashley has been staying with my sister all through my admission in the hospital. I intend getting a new place as soon as I’m strong because my house holds too many painful memories and I just can’t take it.
I haven’t heard from Talia since the last day we appeared in court, but I know she just needs some space and she’d come around when she’s better. She saved my life and at this point, I could do anything for her.
When I regained consciousness on that day three weeks ago, I saw the police everywhere in the house questioning Talia, Annabelle and a few of my neighbors. I was then informed that Talia had given Maverick two bullets to his heart and he died on the spot.
Apparently, when Talia left, she went to get a gun from her boyfriend. She heard me screaming before she entered the house so she called the police and reported the abuse because she knew he wasn’t going to make it out alive. When the police questioned me, I told them it was self-defense and they also saw all the fresh wounds and dried blood on my body. His friends took the case to court but we were not found guilty of murder. I’m just glad everything is over and I can start a new life with my daughter. I am staying away from men for the meantime because I cannot go through all that again.
