Sally decided to focus on herself after the betrayal of her childhood best friends, Nora and Nelly. Though the wounds were fresh. Sally's mother, who was deeply disappointed by Nora and Nelly's actions, became her pillar of support.
One evening, after returning from work, Sally's mother found her daughter sitting outside, gazing at the stars. Concerned, she walked up to her, hoping to offer encouragement.
“Sally, my dear,” her mother called out as she sat down beside her on the bench in the garden.
"Oh, Mom, it's you. When did you get back from work?" Sally asked, startled.
"A few minutes ago. What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing, Mom."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, Mom. I'm not thinking about anything. I'm doing great," Sally replied with a forced smile, trying to reassure her mother.
Sally’s mother gently took her hand. “I understand you're taking time to figure things out, but I want you to know that this pain will pass. It may not be easy to let go of the hurt they caused, but healing is possible if you let it happen. Use this hurt as a medium to become the best version of yourself that you could ever imagine.”
"I will, Mom. Thank you. Thank you for always being there for me. I love you," Sally said, hugging her mother tightly.
Reciprocating the hug, her mother replied, "I love you too, my baby girl."
With those words, Sally felt energized with a new sense of purpose. She began to pursue her passion by writing inspirational stories on her blog, titled "Birthed to Win" which resonated with thousands of readers. Slowly, her focus shifted from the pain of losing her friends to the joy of impacting lives.
Meanwhile, Nora and Nelly were enjoying their time in Nigeria, filling their days with fun activities and exciting experiences. They often spent hours chatting with Joanne over video calls.
Joanne, who had always envied the strong bond between Sally, Nora, and Nelly since secondary school, devised ways to secure her place in Nora and Nelly's lives. She gossiped incessantly, claiming that Sally had always wanted to be the center of attention, giving unsolicited advice and proving herself superior to everyone else.
Nelly and Nora, recalling how Sally frequently gave them counsel and often took the lead in various situations, believed Joanne’s lies. They concluded that she was right and began trusting her more.
“You two are so much fun to be with,” Joanne said during one of their video calls. “I can’t believe Sally held you back all those years. She’s so clingy, always calling, texting, and acting like a Reverend Mother.”
At this, the three women burst into laughter.
"Oh my gosh, Joanne! You have such a sharp tongue. Was that necessary?" Nora giggled. "Although, it does suit her."
Nelly, lounging on her bed, replied nonchalantly, "Come on, Nora. Joanne's telling the truth. It does suit her. Imagine advising us when she’s still stuck in the same place in life. Always proving she knows better than everyone else."
“Well, I’m glad you both are no longer friends,” Joanne replied smugly.
Nora and Nelly agreed. "Oh yes! We're so glad. We’ve ghosted her," they said in unison, laughing out loud.
The conversation shifted to other topics, and three hours later, they ended the call.
Years Later
Sally’s dedication to self-improvement paid off. She became a celebrated author, inspiring readers worldwide to overcome betrayal, find purpose, and embrace their inner strength.
One sunny afternoon in New York City, Sally was walking through the park when she heard familiar voices. Turning around, she froze. Standing before her were Nora and Nelly.
The air between them was thick with unspoken emotions, a mix of surprise, guilt, and nostalgia.
The world truly is a small place, Sally thought.
“Sally?” Nora’s voice trembled as she blinked, trying to confirm if it was Sally standing before her. Nelly stood beside her, equally stunned.
Sally took a deep breath, her heart pounding. She debated whether to respond or walk away. Choosing the former, she replied, “Nora. Nelly. It’s been a while.”
“Yes, it has,” Nelly said softly.
The three women stood in awkward silence before Nora broke down, tears streaming down her face. “We owe you an apology, Sally. We owe you so much more than that.”
Sally looked at Nora, amazed at her apology, and replied, “Go on.”
“We were wrong,” Nelly began. “So wrong to believe Joanne’s lies. She manipulated us, made us think you were trying to outshine us. But we see the truth now.”
Nora nodded, wiping her tears. “We realized her jealousy after she tried to turn us against each other. It wasn’t until we caught her in a lie that we understood how blind we’d been.”
Sally felt a wave of emotions: relief, anger, disbelief, and sadness. “Why didn’t you give me the benefit of the doubt? Why didn’t you talk to me?” she questioned them angrily.
“We were foolish, so foolish, Sally,” Nelly admitted. “Joanne played on our insecurities, and we let her. You didn’t deserve what we did to you.”
Nora stepped closer, her voice breaking. “We’re truly sorry, Sally. Please find it in your heart to forgive us.”
Sally looked at them, tears welling in her eyes. After a moment, she replied, “It hurt deeply. You both hurt me more than I can explain. But holding onto that pain won’t change the past. I forgive you.”
The relief and joy on Nora and Nelly’s faces were palpable. They both jumped in excitement and hugged Sally tightly, promising never to let anyone come between their friendship again.
The three friends decided to spend the day together. They reminisced about their childhood, laughing and sharing memories as they walked to a nearby café. For the first time in years, the bond they once shared felt whole again.
This story teaches us that jealousy is a virus and it spreads to destroy even the strongest bonds, but determination and self-love can help us rise above betrayal.
It also highlights the importance of forgiveness, trust, and communication.
The End.
