Sally, a beautiful young lady, grew up in Africa, specifically Nigeria. She loved dancing, going on adventures, and writing. She had two close friends, Nora and Nelly, who now lived abroad. They had been best friends in Nigeria until both Nora and Nelly relocated to the U.S.

Sally, a jovial, funny, and caring person, always made it a point to check up on her friends. However, one day, something unexpected happened.

“What’s going on with these girls?” Sally wondered aloud. “I keep calling their phones, and they’re not answering.”

“What’s happening, dear?” Sally’s mother asked.

“Nothing, Mom. I’m just worried about my friends. I haven’t heard from them in three months. I’ve been texting them, but they hardly reply. Sometimes, they read my messages and ignore them. And now, they’re not even picking up their phones,” Sally said, her frustration clear.

“Oh, dear, maybe they’re just busy. They’ll call you back. Relax.”

“That’s no excuse, Mom. If they’re too busy to pick up, they could at least send a quick text to let me know they’re okay. That way, I wouldn’t be so worried. This isn’t right.”

“So, what are you going to do? Magically appear at their doorstep?” her mom teased.

“Mom!”

“What? I’m just saying. Relax. There’s nothing wrong with them. I’m sure they’re just caught up with work or something.”

“Okay, Mom. If you say so.”

“Now, give me that beautiful smile and quit worrying. They’re fine.”

Sally smiled at her mom but walked to her room with a furrowed brow. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. It wasn’t like her best friends to ignore her calls and messages. Lying on her bed, she whispered, “I hope all is well with them.”

The next day, Sally received a text from Nelly saying they were busy and would call her soon. Sally felt a wave of relief and excitement. She quickly replied, saying how happy she would be to hear their voices again.

But two months passed, and Sally still hadn’t heard from them. She became increasingly sad, and her mother couldn’t bear to see her daughter so down. Sally’s mom tried calling Nora and Nelly repeatedly, but they didn’t answer.

“What’s wrong with these children?” her mother exclaimed, astonished by their behavior.

“You see, Mom? I think they don’t want to stay in touch with us anymore. Ever since they became friends with Joanne, they’ve completely forgotten about us. I don’t know what Joanne told them to make them act this way,” Sally said, a tear rolling down her cheek.

Her mom frowned. “What do you mean? They have their minds. They wouldn’t let someone like Joanne change them.”

“You’re right, Mom. But you know what they say—who you spend your time with shapes you.”

“Then I’ll be disappointed if they let Joanne influence them.”

“I hope they don’t, Mom.”

A week later, Sally received a video call from Nora. They added Nelly to the call, and Sally’s heart leaped with joy to see both of them.

“You guys forgot about me,” she said, pouting.

“No, we didn’t,” they replied in unison. “We’ve just been busy, that’s all.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, Sally. Now stop complaining and tell us how you’re doing,” Nora said with a laugh. Nelly smiled at Sally’s pouty expression.

“I’m doing great, guys. I miss you so much.”

“Aww, we miss you too,” they replied.

They promised to visit soon. Sally was thrilled, especially at the thought of her mom preparing their favorite dishes. After catching up for a while, they ended the call on a happy note.

Six months later

Sally received a call from Joanne. She hesitated, debating whether to answer. After a deep breath, she picked up.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Sa Sa,” Joanne chirped.

“Stop calling me that.”

“But I love it! Relax, you’re so uptight.”

“Why did you call?” Sally asked, exasperated.

“Oh, just to let you know that Nelly and Nora are in Nigeria. They forgot something here, and I’ve been trying to reach them,” Joanne said innocently.

“Wait, what? They’re in Nigeria?” Sally asked, stunned.

“Of course. Haven’t they told you? Aren’t you supposed to be best friends?” Joanne sneered.

Sally’s heart sank. “You know what? I don’t have time for your nonsense.” She hung up and sat on her bed, devastated.

Her best friends, whom she loved dearly, had been in Nigeria for four months without telling her. They had lied about being in the U.S., even though she had spoken to them just weeks ago. Sally felt betrayed. Memories of their childhood together flooded her mind—playing games, attending school, sharing meals, and dreaming about the future.

Wiping her tears, Sally stood up and resolved to focus on herself. She remembered the saying: Stay close to those who value you and distance yourself from those who don’t. That became her new motto.

NOTE:

In life, people change for various reasons; environment, relationships, distance, influences, and misunderstandings. It is natural to get hurt. However, we should move forward without bitterness and focus on achieving our goals with God’s help.
