Nestled just north of Port Louis, the Rivulet Terre Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary spans around 26 ha of mangroves, mudflats, and shallow coastal waters. Designated a Ramsar wetland in 2001, it's the only such protected site within the capital's limits—and one of the most vibrant bird habitats in Mauritius .

🐦 Why It Matters

It hosts about 1,200+ migrant birds annually, including Curlew Sandpiper, Grey Plover, Whimbrel, Ruddy Turnstone, Bar-Tailed Godwit, and Terek Sandpiper—traveling from as far as the Arctic and Siberia .

Home to three endemic plant species, it acts as a crucial buffer zone filtering pollutants and limiting coastal erosion .

Community-driven conservation and outreach—especially through Roche Bois guides and youth programs—highlight its role as an educational and eco-tourism asset .

🗺️ Your Visit Guide

Access & Hours
About 600 m from the Mer Rouge roundabout, reachable via M2 or local buses. Open Mon–Fri 7:00–15:00, plus weekends during peak migration (Oct–Apr) .

Best Viewing Times
Mornings and late afternoons offer cooler air, clearer skies, and active birdlife. Ideal migratory period is Sept–Mar .

What to Bring
Binoculars, a camera with zoom, water, sturdy shoes for boardwalks, sunscreen, and a hat .

Facilities & Programs
A visitors’ centre (built in 2004) has telescopes, educational panels, and guided tours. Local guides and volunteer clean-ups support awareness and stewardship .

⚠️ Keep in Mind

The estuary’s proximity to the port and industrial zones makes it vulnerable to pollution—waste sometimes washes ashore despite ongoing clean-up efforts .

Respect the ecosystem: stay on boardwalks, no littering, and no loud noises. Hunting or disturbing wildlife is strictly banned .
