Richard Mofe-Damijo has been the standard of Nigerian acting for decades. The Black Book reminded everyone exactly why.
RMD plays Paul Edima, a widowed deacon whose son is killed by corrupt police officers who frame him as a criminal. What follows is a father's mission - methodical, relentless, devastating.
Editi Effiong directed this with the confidence of someone who has watched every great action thriller and understood that pace and character are not enemies of each other. The film never slows down but it never loses its soul either.
What separates The Black Book from a standard revenge thriller is that it is actually about something: the cost of corruption on ordinary families. The systemic rot that takes a good man and gives him no path but the one that terrifies him most.
RMD is heartbreaking in the quiet scenes and ice-cold in the ones that require it. This is a full performance from a complete actor.
Rating: 9/10. Nollywood's best thriller in years.
