The Potiskum Local Government Council has clarified the recent directive issued to owners of temporary roadside shops across the town, following widespread public misunderstanding of the policy.
Speaking on the matter, the Executive Chairman of Potiskum LGA, Hon. Salisu Muktari explained that the instruction for traders operating along major roads to adjust their structures backward by three meters is not a demolition or eviction exercise but a proactive step aimed at improving road safety and urban order within Potiskum.
According to the council, the adjustment directive was necessitated by the growing encroachment of temporary structures onto major roads, a development that has significantly reduced road width, obstructed traffic flow, and increased the risk of accidents for motorists, pedestrians, and traders themselves.
“The essence of this exercise is safety and accessibility,” the council stated. “It is designed to create wider and safer roads, reduce traffic congestion, and prevent avoidable accidents, especially in busy commercial areas of the town.”
The council noted that contrary to public speculation, no trader is being forced out of business. Rather, affected shop owners are only required to slightly reposition their temporary structures to create the needed road setback, in line with basic urban planning and public safety standards.
Hon. Salisu Muktari reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of traders and small business owners, stressing that economic activities remain a vital part of Potiskum’s growth and development.
He also called on residents and traders to cooperate with local authorities and avoid misinformation that could undermine collective progress.
The Potiskum Local Government Council urged the public to view the directive as a community-focused intervention aimed at building a safer, more organized, and more livable Potiskum, adding that dialogue and cooperation remain central to the successful implementation of the policy.
