I knew this couple back in the day when they were dating
Their love story was enviable, the type that got other folks hating
They were an inseparable pair; it was obvious for all to see
A match made in heaven as man and wife, they were meant to be
The man carried his wife like a trophy & his source of pride
They wore matching clothes, wherever he went, she was by his side
He always voiced how she inspired him and filled his life with joy
Their bond would be tested when they welcomed a baby boy
Then another child, adding to their family size as a year rolled by
With every birth, it seemed her beauty began to fade in his eyes
His love for his once-beloved wife started to shift to the children more
The kids were now the centre of his world - things weren't like before
A proud father loving his kids to the moon – isn’t wrong
But while he bonded with the kids, he alienated his wife all along
She started to feel distant, like a stranger in her own home
He often spent time with the kids, and left her feeling dry all alone
Within five years of marriage, she was already nursing her fourth child
With no maid to help, she bore the burden alone, and it drove her wild
Sometimes, she found herself feeling overwhelmed & distressed
Post-partum stress took its toll, she was mentally & emotionally depressed
She craved understanding, but her husband was emotionally unresponsive
He often would throw hurtful words at her, saying she was no longer attractive
Coz successive years of childbirth with every scar left made her body change
Instead of appreciating all the sacrifices she endured, the man started to change
He would remind her of how he had loved her when she had a figure eight
Distastefully calling her a fat woman cos she significantly gained weight
He no longer took her out on romantic dates, and the pain crushed her spirit
She was fighting many silent wars, her body and soul couldn't stand it
She had put her career on hold, assuming the role of a housewife
Regret plagued her soul, and she blamed herself for her miserable life
The pain her husband caused made her also treat her kids with disdain
Coz whenever she looked at them, they elicited her anger and pain
The trauma she carried every day was a battle she couldn't win
Walking away was the bravest thing she did to save her skin
She left all behind to escape the pain that killed her slowly within
I pray she finds the healing she deserves as a new chapter in her life begins.
