Polokwane International Airport may not be as busy as South Africa’s major hubs, but it plays a vital role in connecting Limpopo Province to the rest of the country—and beyond. Located just outside the city of Polokwane, it serves as the main aerial link to this agriculturally rich and culturally vibrant region.
Originally a military airbase, the airport was upgraded to international status in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Though international traffic is limited, the facility meets global standards and regularly hosts charter and cargo flights, especially during peak travel or seasonal events.
Its main draw is domestic travel, with regular routes to Johannesburg and Cape Town. Polokwane International is particularly important for business travelers, government officials, and tourists heading to destinations like the Kruger National Park’s northern gates, Magoebaskloof, or the ancient ruins of Mapungubwe.
Facilities include rental car services, a small café, and basic passenger amenities. It’s a quiet airport, but its presence keeps Limpopo accessible and on the map—literally and economically.
