The Palais de Lomé is a historic and cultural landmark located in the heart of Lomé, the capital city of Togo. Originally built as the Governor's Palace during the German colonial era in the late 19th century, the building has since been restored and transformed into a vibrant center for art, culture, and history. Today, the Palais de Lomé serves as a major cultural destination, celebrating Togolese heritage and African creativity through various exhibitions, events, and programs.
📍Lomé, Togo
The Palais de Lomé was initially constructed between 1898 and 1905 when Togo was a German colony. It was used as the official residence for German colonial governors and later, after World War I, it served as the seat for the French colonial administration when Togo came under French control following Germany's defeat.
Throughout its colonial history, the building was a symbol of foreign rule, but after Togo’s independence in 1960, the palace became a national treasure. For many years, however, the building was neglected and fell into disrepair, until its restoration project began in the 2010s.
