OJUDE OBA FESTIVAL - DAY 8
There are so many festivals in Africa but the one my heart got knitted to, in recent times, is the Ojude Oba Festival, probably because it wss loud the last time.
The Ojude Oba festival is a yearly cultural and religious celebration in Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria that honors the Awujale, the king of the Ijebu people, and showcases Ijebu culture
The following are what you should know about the festival.
When: Usually held on the third day after Eid al-Kabir, a major Islamic holiday.
What: A carnival-like celebration with a royal parade, horse riding, cultural performances, fashion show, and food.
Who: Open to people of all ages, religions, and backgrounds, including social clubs called regberegbes.
Significance: Traditional, cultural, religious, social, and military.
History: Origins trace back to the early days of Islam in the Ijebu region. One oral account says the festival began when Balogun Kuku, a community leader, paid homage to the king after accepting Islam.
Tourism: Attracts tourists from around the world. The festival's potential to boost tourism and diversify the economy has led to increased government and corporate involvement.
It is a definitely a festival to attend and you cannot regret it.
