Oh absolutely. I crashed and burned so hard on a 6am-10pm color-coded schedule that I couldn't even doodle for three months. The worst part was I'd built it to protect my creative time, but ended up strangling it instead.
What worked for me was something boring but effective: I started treating my schedule like a riverbank instead of a railroad. I picked just two non-negotiable anchors per day, usually a morning creative session (even 20 minutes) and an evening walk. Everything else became a "maybe" that I'd slot in if energy and inspiration were there. The key was forgiving myself instantly when I missed those anchors, no guilt spiral, just "okay, tomorrow."
I also discovered that strict routines kill creativity because they remove the boredom and daydreaming space where ideas actually grow. So I intentionally left empty pockets in my week, like Tuesday afternoons with no plan at all. That unstructured time became where my best ideas landed. It felt terrifying at first, like I was being lazy, but those gaps are where the magic happens.
One practical trick: I use a "weekly menu" instead of a daily schedule. I list 5-7 things I'd like to get done in the week, then each morning I pick 2-3 based on how I actually feel. It keeps the structure loose but still gives me direction.
