OF STRUGGLE WITH DARKNESS

A man in the shadows,
firmly attached to an apparatus.
in him, it pokes many holes,
with talons still in place.

Hearts ache for his state,
tears and grief, all urging him to tear away.
But each time he tries,
in maddening pain he screams!
Much is this pain, he convinces himself,
he is fine where he is.

Many times his spirits dimly glows,
but constantly the apparatus comes to life,
warning him: "Even if this pain you bear,
your holes and scars, they would all see,
With us, they would know you have been,
No love awaits you, only humiliation and prosecution,
Here we keep you safe from them,
your eyes you should close to rest,
your strength you should save for better things."

He grows quiet,
lamenting ever friending the shadows,
As he feels himself gently dragged to damnation,
Hoping the consequences,
He would be able to bear.

He really wishes to do better,
but the scars and the pain,
and humiliation to face,
in place they keep him.

Now, it is no longer hard to see,
why that which is right, is so hard to do,
despite promises of peace and balance
of light and joy.

If these people you see,
condemn them not,
strength for good you should wish them.
Aren't we all hooked to tantalizing torture,
that gives us fleeing pleasure and costs us liberation?

A commendable free verse that talks despair and how difficult it is to get above the opinions of others to find one's inner strength
