As the cock crows, Omasirachi got up, tidied up the compound and prepared to leave for the river…
Before leaving, she fed Ezinne and also gave her some herb juice.

Mama I will be going to the river to get some fish, which I will sell at the market. After selling the fish I will quickly come back home to attend to you.. Try to get some rest.. said Omasirachi as she assisted Ezinne to lie on the mat

When Omasirachi arrived at the river, Mazi Oke gave her some fish, which she took to the market to sell.
After selling the fish, Omasirachi bought some food items from the market and took them home.

Mama! Am back! Omasirachi shouted, as she walks into the hut.
Mama, are you still sleeping? Omasirachi asked.
Ezinne gave no response..
Mama I hope you are not burning up? asked Omasirachi as she check Ezinne’s temperature.
Mama, your body is cold.. Why are you this cold? Omasirachi asked being worried.
Mama!! Omasirachi tapped Ezinne.
“Mama, why aren’t you responding? Mama, wake up!”.. said Omasirachi, shaking Ezinne gently.
“Omasirachi was gripped with fear, as Ezinne wasn’t responding.. Tears rolled down Omasirachi’s eyes, as she screamed.
“Mama, no, you can’t be dead!’..
“Mama please don’t leave me! Please wake up!” Omasirachi kept on shaking Ezinne.
Please don’t leave me, I’ll be left alone, I have no one to go to.. Who will I turn to in this cruel world?” Omasirachi cried out.

The neighbors could hear Omasirachi crying, they ran into Ezinne’s hut to know what was going on…
Ezinne is dead? One of the neighbor exclaimed.
“Oh no!.. Her husband died few weeks ago, and now she is dead too”.. said Another neighbor.

Some of the villagers cried along with Omasirachi, while some consoled her.
“Omasirachi we are so sorry for your lost.. Please accept our condolences”.. said The villagers

“Oma! Oma!!.. Uju shouted as she walks in.
“What’s going on here? Why is everyone crying and Oma why…” Uju tries to speak, then she saw Ezinne’s lifeless body.
“What am I seeing!” Uju exclaimed
“Oma! Your mother is dead?” Uju shouted.
“Uju stood still for some minutes, staring at Ezinne’s lifeless body”..
“I can’t believe what am seeing”… Uju said as she burst in tears.
Uju walked up to Omasirachi, she wiped Omasirachi’s tears with her hand, as she consoled her.
“Oma! Please stop crying”… Uju consoled Omasirachi, as she cry along with her.
“Uju, my mother has left me in this world just the way my father left me”…
“Uju, who did I offend? First I lost my birth parents and now I have also lost my adopted parent”… Omasirachi lamented.
“Oma, you didn’t offend anyone.. Please stop crying” I can’t help but cry whenever I see you crying”… said Uju, as she sobbed.

As darkness fell, the villagers who came to console Omasirachi over Ezinne’s death, began to head home, leaving Omasirachi and Uju alone..

~
After the Ezinne was buried, Omasirachi took the money which she had saved for Ezinne’s treatment to the traditional doctor..

I came to pay the remaining part of the money, which am owing you for my mother’s treatment.. Omasirachi said to the traditional doctor.
You don’t have to worry about that.. You can make use of the money to settle other things.. said the traditional doctor.
“I worked hard to come up with the money, Please accept the money”.. Omasirachi said.
“Take the money as part of my condolence”.. said the traditional doctor.
“Thank you”.. Omasirachi replied.
“I am sorry you lost your mother, I tried hard to save her, but she wasn’t responding to the treatments”.. You just have to be strong my daughter, don’t let the death of your parents, take you down”… The traditional doctor said.
“I will be strong for my parents” Omasirachi responded, as tears assembled at her eyes.

EPISODE 12

“Oma oo, where are you?” Uju shouted, as she walks into Omasirachi’s hut..
When Uju walked in, she saw Omasirachi packing up her things..
“Oma, where are you going to? Are you leaving this village?” asked Uju.
Yes I’m leaving.. Omasirachi answered.
Where are you headed? Uju asked.
Anywhere.. Omasirachi answered, as she continue to fold her wrappers.
“But why are you leaving this kingdom? How do you know where you are going? You don’t anywhere else”. “You have never leave Uruwa kingdom”.. “Don’t tell me that you are going to Aguta Kingdom!.. Uju said.
“Yes, that’s where am going to.. Omasirachi replied.
No, no, no.. You aren’t going there…
But why do you want to go to Aguta? Do you want to endanger life? Can’t you see what happened to your father? The King of Aguta is cruel, please don’t go anywhere close to him”.. If your parent were here they won’t let you go to Aguta.. Uju said.
Uju, I don’t have any reason why am in Uruwa, my parents are dead, there is no need staying here all alone. Atleast I have a reason why am going to Aguta.. Omasirachi said.
And what is your reason? To avenge your parents death? And how do you think that will be possible? You are just a woman without any warriors, how do you want to bring down a great king? Uju asked.
Omasirachi gave no response..

“My friend, you are going for a sucide mission.. said Uju, as she held Oma’s shoulders with her both hands.
“Uju my friend, do not worry about me, I will be okay.. said Omasirachi as she held Uju’s hand.
“So after all I have said, you are still going to Aguta? Uju questioned.
Omasirachi shook her head in response to yes. “If you still insist on going to Aguta, then I will come along with you. I just want to be sure that you are safe.. said Uju.
“What about your parents? They won’t permit you to go to Aguta”.. Omasirachi said.
“Don’t worry I will think of something to tell them.. Uju replied.
“No, I will go alone.. said Omasirachi.
“Oma, I am coming with you.. Uju said.
You have to stay with your parents, they need you.. said Omasirachi.
“Okay but whenever you need my help, don’t fail to reach out to me.. said Uju.
Okay.. Omasirachi responded.

Uju escorted Omasirachi to the river, where Omasirachi took a boat going to Aguta..
“Please be safe out there, you are the only friend I got, I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.. Uju whispered to Omasirachi, while they hugged themselves.
“I will be careful out there.. Omasirachi responded.
The both waved goodbye, as the boat sailed away..

~
Few hours, Omasirachi arrived at Aguta.. She wandered about not knowing where to go to..

“Soon it will get dark, where can I spend a night?” Omasirachi muttered, as she look around.
“The day has finally come! The child of the prophecy has finally found herself on the path of her destiny!” exclaimed an old seer.
Omasirachi turned around to see who was speaking behind her..
Omasirachi saw an old woman staring at her with a smile on her face.. She glanced around wandering if the old woman was addressing someone else, but there was no one else in sight.
“Are you talking to me?” Omasirachi asked the old seer.
The Old seeyer shook her head, in affirmation.
“Please, forgive my manners. Greetings to you respected one”.. Omasirachi greeted the old seer.
“Greetings to you, young one”.. The Old seer responded.

“Please, what do you mean? What prophecy are you talking about?” Omasirachi asked the Old seer.
“I have long seen and awaited this day.. The day you will finally set foot in Aguta”.. said the Old seer.
“I’m completely lost”.. Omasirachi said, her face scrunched up in confusion.
“Come with me, there is much you need to know.. said the Old seer, as she led the way.

EPISODE 13

As Omasirachi walked behind the old seer, She wondered…
“Why am I following an Old woman I know nothing about?”… She thought.
“I have no choice.. I don’t have a place to spend the night and I’m also curious to know what she has to tell me.. Omasirachi muttered to herself. Her doubts growing with each step.

When they arrived at the Old seer’s house, the Old seer went inside to fetch a stool for Omasirachi to sit on. As the Old seer emerged, carrying the stool, Omasirachi quickly walked up to her and took the stool from her grasp. “Let me help you with that”… Omasirachi said, relieving the Old seer of the burden.
“Thank you”.. The Old seer responded.
Omasirachi carried the stool outside and placed it near the Old seer, who stood beside it.
“Why are you standing? Please have a seat”.. The Old seer said.
“Thank you”… Omasirachi replied sitting down.
“Feel free to rest”, the Old seer continued.
I will bring out some food for you to eat.. I know you must be hungry.. said the Old seer.
Omasirachi nodded her head gently in response, acknowledging the Old seer’s kindness.

A few minutes later, the Old seer emerged with a steaming dish, which she served to Omasirachi. Omasirachi devoured the food like someone who hadn’t eaten in days. As she ate, she noticed the Old seer glancing at her and immediately she composed herself.
“I’m sorry,” Omasirachi said dabbing at her mouth with the back of her hand. I have been without food since I got to Aguta.”
“Oh, that’s not a problem.. The Old seer respond with a warm smile.
“I’m just happy to see you eat. I haven’t had a guest in a long time; I have always been alone in this hut.. it feels good to see someone dinning in my house.. said the Old seer.
“Ohh”.. Omasirachi said, swallowing her last bite.
“You don’t have any family?” Omasirachi asked.
“No I don’t”.. The Old seer responded.
Omasirachi restrain herself from asking more questions.

After Omasirachi was done eaten, and rested for a while, she requested that the Old seer should tell her what she wanted to share with her earlier, about the prophecy.
“Whose child am I? And what prophecy are you talking about?” Omasirachi asked, her eagerness to know the truth was obvious.
The Old seer cleared her throat before speaking up..
You are the daughter of Uchenna and Ogadinma.. The Old seer began.
Concerning the prophecy… A prophecy was told to the king by the Chief priest that his down fall will be caused by a child born on the same day as his son, Prince Ugonna. The king was furious about the prophecy and ordered his guards to kill all babies born that very day..
The Old seer paused, collecting her thoughts before continuing..
You escaped death because your parents sacrificed their lives to save you… And you, my child, have a destiny to fulfill.. said the Old seer.

“This King, why is he so wicked! So cruel!”Omasirachi exclaimed, her voice shaking with anger and sorrow.
“He has brought pain to me even without even knowing me.. First he murdered my birth parents, then he murdered my adopted father, who only went to sell the fishes he caught. And then my adopted mother died because she couldn’t bare the pain of losing her husband”..
“Why have this so-called king, chosen to make me an orphan.. I will stop at nothing to see his downfall”.. Omasirachi vowed, her words fueled by pain and determination.

The Old seer exhaled deeply, after observing Omasirachi’s reactions. Then she spoke in a solemn tone…
“King Obidike, has been known for his evil actions”.. “Not only has he brought pain to you, but also to almost everyone in Aguta”.. “He is a nightmare to his people”.. The Old seer said.
How can I end the reign of this wicked king? Omasirachi asked, her voice firm.
That is unknown to me.. The Old seer replied.
Omasirachi face fell…
There must be a way.. Omasirachi muttered.
It won’t be an easy task my child… No one has dare to bring King Obidike down. You will need to think smartly and I believe the God of our land will guide and protect you.. The Old seer said.
Isee (Amen)… Omasirachi responded.

Can I stay at your place for some days? I have no where to go to.. Omasirachi said to the Old seer.
You are always welcome to stay… The Old seer responded.
Thank you.. Omasirachi replied, with a smile.

These next few days, I will need to walk around Aguta and think of a plan… It won’t be easy to get close to King Obidike but like the Old seer said, I need to think smartly… Omasirachi thought to herself.

EPISODE 14

As the new day broke, Omasirachi ventured into the village, she moved around the palace wall in search of an entry point. Suddenly a guard shouted, “Hey young lady! What are you doing here?”
“Errmm, I uhmm”… Omasirachi stumbled over her words.
The Chief guard approached Omasirachi.
Why are you skulking around the palace wall? asked The Chief guard, in a tone firm.
I-I want to seek a job in the palace.. Omasirachi voice trembled.
A job? The Chief guard scoffed.
There is no vacancy, leave now! The Chief guard ordered.

Omasirachi grasped the Chief guard’s hand pleading, “Please try to confirm, even if it’s a maid or a cook position”.
The Chief guard glared at Omasirachi, his hand still clasped in hers. Omasirachi quickly released her grip, apologizing, “Oh I’m sorry”.
The Chief guard turned his back, dismissing her. “ Do not make me repeat. Myself leave now!”.
What a grumpy man.. Omasirachi muttered under her breath.

As Omasirachi walked away from the palace gate, she noticed a group of beggars lining the road that lead to the palace. She couldn’t help but think, “How can there be beggars close to the palace, yet they still have nothing to eat? What a wicked king, who doesn’t care about his people”.. Omasirachi muttered to herself as she passed by the beggars

As she walked passed the beggars, she stopped and turned around.
I have an idea… Omasirachi said to her self.

Omasirachi hastened to the market, using the little money she had to purchase some food items.
She then returned to the beggars and shared the food with them, earning their gratitude.
Omasirachi walked up to one of the beggar and seek to ask the beggar a confidential question.
What will you like to know about? The beggar asked.
“I want to know when the Queen leaves the palace.. Omasirachi replied in a low voice.
The beggars eyes widened in surprise. The Queen?! Why do you want to know that? If I’m caught discussing about the Queen or any member of the Royal family, I will be executed by the King.. said the beggar.

Omasirachi nodded understandingly..
“Please I really need to know. You can whisper it in my ear and no one will hear you mention the Queen’s name”. said Omasirachi.
The beggar hesitated, then leaned in close.
“The Queen leaves the palace every first day of the month. She visits the Chief priest for cleansing ritual regarding the village”.
Omasirachi thanked the beggar for the valuable information.
“Now I need to focus on meeting the Queen instead”. Omasirachi thought to herself, as she walked away.

Omasirachi returned to the Old seer’s house, where the Old seer was engaged with her spiritual activities. She waited patiently for the Old seer to be done.

A few minutes later, the old seer emerge from her quarters.
Oma, you are back.. The Old seer said acknowledging Omasirachi’s return.
Yes, greetings to you, respected one.. Omasirachi greeted.
The Old seer responded to the greeting and Omasirachi informed the old seer that she will be going back to Uruwa but she will be back before the first day of the new month.
“Okay.. said the Old seer.
May there be no danger in your path, as you journey back to Uruwa.. Prayed the Old seer.
Isee(Amen)… Omasirachi responded.
Omasirachi thanked the Old seer, as she prepared to leave.

~
When Omasirachi gets to Uruwa, she quickly went to meet Uju her friend.
Oma!! What are you doing here?!.. Uju exclaimed being surprised by Omasirachi’s sudden return.
You went to Aguta few days ago and you are already back? Or have you killed the wicked King already? Uju asked jokingly.
Omasirachi chuckled. “No I haven’t”…
Remember when you said I should reach out to you whenever I need your help?” Omasirachi continued. “That’s why am here, Uju I need your help”.. said Omasirachi.
Okay, tell me what’s it? asked Uju being curious.
As Omasirachi hesitated, Uju thought to herself, “I hope she won’t send me on a sucide mission..” She eagerly await Omasirachi’s explanation, while her mind raced.

EPISODE 15

Omasirachi broke the silence, revealing her plan to Uju.
“I want to approach the Queen of Aguta, but I need a strategy to do so without arousing any suspicion..” said Omasirachi.
Uju eyes widened with concern. “The Queen of Aguta? How do you plan to approach her? What’s your plan Oma? Please don’t put yourself in danger.”
Omasirachi reassured her, “That’s why I have come up with a plan. I need your help to execute it”.. said Omasirachi.
“What do you need my help for?” Uju curiosity got the better of her.
“I want you to convince Ike to assist us. He is crucial to our plan”.. Omasirachi explained.
“Ike? Which Ike? The one who has a crush on me? Uju questioned.
Omasirachi nodded. “The same one. He will do anything for you because he loves you.. said Omasirachi.
Uju hesitated, “But I don’t love him. And what exactly do you need him to do?”.
Omasirachi shared her plan and Uju concern grew. “Oma, isn’t this a dangerous task? Are you sure it’s worth the risk?” Uju asked.
“Uju, I think this is the only way to get myself into the palace. Please help your friend”.. Omasirachi pleaded.
Uju reluctantly agreed, “Okay I’ll try to talk to Ike, but only because of you..
Omasirachi thanked her, embracing Uju in gratitude.

Uju met with Ike and requested his assistance.. Ike gladly agreed to help despite knowing the risks involved.

Three days before the new month, Omasirachi returned to the Old seer’s house in Aguta..
Omasirachi asked the Old seer questions about Aguta, and the Old seer provided her all the information she sought..
“There will be a bride selection for the Prince”.. The Old seer said.
“A bride selection?” Omasirachi asked.
The Old seer explained, “Yes, the King is searching for a suitable bride for his son.
Are you interested in participating? The Old seer asked.
Omasirachi scoffed, “No am not interested.. Why would I want to marry the son of that wicked king?.. Omasirachi’s expression conveyed disgust.
The Old seer chuckled, amused by Omasirachi’s reaction. “I see,” she said with a smile.

The new month had arrived, and Omasirachi waited at the river bank for Uju and Ike, who arrived promptly.
“Good, you are both here” She said. We will wait at the bottom of the hill, until the Queen is done with the cleansing ritual. Then Ike will approach her.. Omasirachi said.
“Won’t she have guard with her?” Uju asked.
“I learned that, she doesn’t bring guard during the cleansing ritual”. “Only her maids accompany her”.. Omasirachi replied.
“Okay, let’s go”.. Uju said.

They waited at the bottom of the hill, until the Queen is done with the ritual.
As Queen Akugo descended the hill, Ike rushed out of his hiding, with a matchet and pretended to be a robber.
“If you come closer, I will slit the Queen’s throat”.. Ike threatened the maids.

The maids trembled with fear, backing away from the Queen.
“Take of your gold jewelries and hand it over to me”.. Ike demanded.
The Queen removed her jewelries and handed it to Ike.
Also take off your bangle.. Ike ordered.
“I can’t take of my heirloom bangle.. I can give you something else, instead of this”.. Queen Akugo said.
“I said take it off”.. Ike shouted.
Queen Akugo trembled, with fear.

Omasirachi and Uju crept up quietly, and Omasirachi struck Ike on the head with a stick.
Ike shouted in pain, as the gold he had taken, fell from his hand.
He held his bleeding and ran off.

Queen Akugo turned around and saw Omasirachi holding a stick which had a blood on it.
“Young maiden, thank you for saving me..” Queen Akugo said.
Omasirachi picked up the Queen’s gold jewelries and returned it back to her.
“Thank you”.. said Queen Akugo, as she received the jewelries.
“I’m grateful, if you hadn’t shown up, the robber might had killed me.. How can I repay you for this favour?. Say anything you want and I will do it”.. Queen Akugo said.

EPISODE 16

“Anything?” Omasirachi asked the Queen, seeking confirmation.
“Yes, request anything and I will grant your wish”.. Queen Akugo said.
“I would like to work in the palace”.. Omasirachi said.
Queen Akugo raised an eyebrown, surprised.
“Why would you want to work as a servant in the palace? I thought you would request money or gold or jewelries or perhaps a plot of land.. said Queen Akugo.
Omasirachi’s request seemed unusual to the Queen. She turned to her Chief maid, Olu, and asked, “ Is there any job available in the palace for her?”
“No my Queen.. There are no job vacancy at present”… Olu, the Chief maid replied.
Queen Akugo turned back to Omasirachi
“I’m sorry, there’s no available job in the palace, but you can make another request.. Queen Akugo said.

Omasirachi thought to herself.. What other request can I make that will get me into the palace.. She pondered for a moment, then a sly idea struck her.
“I want to be among the maidens for the Prince’s bride selection.. Omasirachi said aloud.
Queen Akugo raised an eyebrow…
“The Prince’s bride selection? Why would you want that?” Queen Akugo asked.

Omasirachi fabricated a romantic tale…
I saw the Prince once and I fell deeply in love with him from afar.. The Prince is the reason why I want to work in the palace, so that I can get to see him every day.. Being part of Prince’s bride selection will be my earnest heart desire..
Queen Akugo believed Omasirachi’s lie.
“I see why you want to be part of the selection.. You can come to the palace with me, and I will tell the king about your bravery. I will return the Favour.. said Queen Akugo.
Okay my Queen.. Omasirachi replied.

Before leaving with the Queen, Omasirachi whispered to Uju..
Please apologize to Ike for me, I hope he didn’t really get hurt.. Offer him the money I gave to you as his payment for helping us.. Omasirachi said.
Okay, I will deliver your message to him.. Uju replied.

After Omasirachi left with the Queen, Uju met with Ike and express concern about his well-being.
“Hope you weren’t hurt, and the blood.. Uju said pointing to his head.
Ike chuckled… “Oh the blood? It’s not mine. Omasirachi rubbed animal blood on the stick she used to hit me. I’m fine”.. said Ike.
Uju looked relieved.
“I thought, you were bleeding also… Uju said.
No I wasn’t… Ike reassured her.

Uju, delivered Omasirachi’s message and offered him the money but Ike declined.
“No need for that. I was happy to pay. You or Omasirachi don’t owe me anything. Feel free to ask for my help, anytime”..said Ike.
Uju thanked him and Ike asked, “Are you heading back to Uruwa? We can go together.
“Not now. I will wait for Omasirachi to return from the palace.. Uju replied.
Ike nodded understandingly and shyly waved goodbye as he set off towards Uruwa..

~
Meanwhile at the palace, Queen Akugo presented Omasirachi to King Obidike.
As they entered, the maids bowed to the King, but Omasirachi stood still staring at him.. The Chief maid discreetly tapped Omasirachi, signaling her to bow along with the others.
Omasirachi reluctantly bowed.

King Obidike asked Queen Akugo about the cleansing ritual, and she recounted her encounter with the robber.
The King expression turned shocked.. “What?!! A robber tried to steal from you and threatened your life?!” King Obidike asked.
Yes my King.. I was terrified until this maiden intervened.. She struck the robber, causing him to flee.. said the Queen.
King Obidike gazed turned to Omasirachi.
“You mean this young maiden saved you?” The King asked.
Yes my King… Queen Akugo answered with a smile.
The King commanded Omasirachi to rise. As she stood before him, he asked, “How did you find the courage to confront the robber?
I saw the the Queen in danger, and summoned courage to save her.. Omasirachi replied.

King Obidike studied Omasirachi from head to toe.
“I see… “What do you want in return for saving the Queen’s life? You must have a request.. said King Obidike.
“I have already made my request known to the Queen” Omasirachi responded.
And what might that request be? King Obidike asked.

EPISODE 17

Queen Akugo responded to King Obidike’s question.
“She requested to be among the Prince’s selected bride.. Queen Akugo answered.
The King scoffed, “She want to contest for the Prince’s bride?” King Obidike asked for clarification.
Queen Akugo nodded. “Yes my king.
King Obidike turned over to Omasirachi and asked.. “What qualifies you for wanting to contest for the Prince’s bride? King Obidike asked.

Omasirachi frowned, at the king’s tone. She replied sluggishly. “I love the Prince and want to try my luck at being his bride.. Omasirachi replied.
Hmm.. King Obidike stared at Omasirachi, up and down with a disgusted look.
King Obidike turned to Queen Akugo..
“So my Queen, you can pick anyone just to contest for your son’s bride? King Obidike asked.
No my King, I only granted her wish as a gesture of gratitude for saving my life.. I’m merely returning the favour.. Queen Akugo explained.

This contest is only for the daughters of Chiefs and wealthy merchants not some lowly life… said King Obidike.
Queen Akugo bent her head listening to the king’s objection.
She can’t participate for the contest! King Obidike emphasized.

Omasirachi quickly knelt before the king and pleaded..
Please my King! I love the Prince.. Just give me the chance, if don’t win, I will leave and never come back… Omasirachi said.
Queen Akugo joined Omasirachi plea.
Please my King, grant her request.. I gave her my word that I will grant her anything she asked. If not for her, my life would had being in danger.. Please permit her to partake in the contest.. Queen Akugo pleaded along with Omasirachi.

King Obidike expressed his concern, “What if she is a spy?.. You can’t trust these low lives”.
Queen Akugo reassured him, “Then I will take responsibility for it.. Please let her partake. I gave her my word and I won’t go back on it.. Please, my king, let her try her luck. She might not surpass other noble maidens but let her just try her.. said Queen Akugo.
After Queen Akugo’s, persistent pleading, King Obidike finally accepted Omasirachi participation in the contest.

Once they left the palace, Queen Akugo instructed Omasirachi to prepare herself and join the other maidens in the palace for the contest. Omasirachi thanked Queen Akugo departed.

As Omasirachi walked back home, she thought to herself.
What have I gotten myself into? How did I get involved in the Prince’s marriage?.

Oma, how did it go? Uju asked.
I can finally gain access to the palace.. Omasirachi replied.
That’s a great news! Uju exclaimed.
But come to think of it, why did you mention joining the Prince’s contest?
When did you develop an interest in the Prince? You never mention that to me.. Uju said.
Omasirachi snapped, “That’s because I never had any interest in the Prince…
So why do you want to participate in the Prince contest?” Uju asked.
It’s the only way I can get into the palace.. Omasirachi responded.

Omasirachi walked back to the Old seer’s compound, greeting the Old seer as she entered.
The Old seer responded to her greeting and asked, “Why do you look so glum? What’s wrong?
I’m contesting for the Prince’s bride.. Omasirachi replied.
Ohh.. I thought you said you are not interested..
I’m not interested.. But I have no choice.. My main focus is King Obidike not the Prince.. Omasirachi clarified.
So you met King Obidike today? Old seer asked for clarification.
“Yes… and I felt like strangling him with my bare hands. Seeing him makes my blood boil”… Omasirachi responded.
The Old seer understood, “I see, but you must control your anger towards him”… said The Old seer.
I will see to that.. Omasirachi replied.

EPISODE 18

Omasirachi arrived at the palace with her belongings and was led by the Chief maid to where the other maidens were gathered.
As she joined the others, she felt uneasy and out of place. The other maidens stared at her whispering among themselves.

“I thought we had all the contestants. “Why add another one?” Anwulika, one of the maiden, asked the Chief maid.
“She was brought in by the Queen”.. The Chief maid replied firmly.
Anwulika protested, but the Chief maid cut her off. “No but”..

The Chief maid introduced Omasirachi to the other maidens and lectured them on the rules and consequences of violating any of the rules.
After the Chief maid left, Anwulika approached Omasirachi.
“I know the families of all the other maidens, atleast their wealth and status are well known in the village. But I have no idea about you or your family. So, tell me, what family are you from? Anwulika questioned.
Omasirachi ignored Anwulika.
Are you not the one am talking to? Anwulika questioned.
Omasirachi continued to snub her and acted as if no one was speaking to her.
Anwulika pushed Omasirachi’s shoulder, saying, “How dare you snub me?! Anwulika yelled.

Just then, one of the maidens announced
“Here comes the Queen”..
Anwulika quickly returned to her place, and the maidens all bowed as Queen Akugo entered.
The Queen responded to their greetings and addressed the maidens, announcing that the contest would begin in three day’s time.
“In this contest, you will have to make the Prince fall in love with you. Various tasks will be assigned to each of you. Do your best and the maidens who wins the Prince’s heart will become his bride and the future Queen of Aguta kingdom”.. Queen Akugo announced.
The maidens rejoiced, while Omasirachi showed no concern.

In the third day, the contest began. The maidens dressed up nicely to appear before the Royal family and Chiefs.
Anwulika wore her finest attire to catch the Prince’s attention.
Omasirachi, however dressed casually, murmuring, “All this is weary, I can’t imagine dressing up for a man I neither love nor know anything about..

Once the maidens were ready, they appeared at the palace. The Chief maid called out each maiden’s name, announcing their family reputation as they bowed before the King, Queen, Prince and Chiefs.
When it was Omasirachi’s turn, she bowed to the Royal family and Chiefs.
“Young maiden, where are you from? Which family did you come from?” Chief Ezenna asked.
Yes, which family are you from? This contest is mostly for the daughters of Chiefs and Wealthy merchants. Whose daughter are you? Chief Okezie asked.
I’m from Uruwa, and my both parents are dead? Omasirachi answered.
“What?! Uruwa?!” King Obidike exclaimed.
“Yes, my King”.. Omasirachi responded.
“My Queen, you brought a maiden from outside our kingdom to participate for the contest?” asked King Obidike.
Initially, I wasn’t aware that she wasn’t from Aguta, I found out few days ago.. But I don’t see anything wrong with someone from our neighboring kingdom participating. It’s not forbidden in our custom or is it forbidden my elders? Queen Akugo asked the elders.
No, it isn’t. The elders chorused.
The Prince can also get married from neighboring kingdoms.. Elder Ezenna included.

King Obidike groaned, looking at Omasirachi with disdain.
What title did your father held, before he passed away? King Obidike asked.
My father had no title, when he was alive.. Omasirachi responded.
The maidens whispered along themselves,
“So she is just a commoner. What is she doing in the contest? This contest is only meant for the nobles”..
King Obidike sneered at Omasirachi, “You aren’t fit to be here.. This contest isn’t meant for a low life like you…
Queen Akugo remained silent, while King Obidike continued, “My Queen, this maiden must leave the contest. Her father had no title. How can a commoner be the Prince’s bride? She must drop out of the contest..

“Ohh no, If i’m sent out of the contest, I won’t be able to fulfill my plan on ending this cruel king’s reign”.. Omasirachi said with herself.
Guards! Take her out of the palace.. King Obidike ordered.

EPISODE 19

The guards moved to escort Omasirachi out, but Prince Ugonna’s voice stopped them.
“Stop!! Let her be”.. Prince Ugonna ordered.
The Chief guard hesitated, “But my Prince…”
Prince Ugonna’s firm voice cut him off, “Let go off her”..
King Obidike’s face turned red with anger, but Prince Ugonna stood his ground.
“Father, why send her away because of her background? She’s already begun the competition and it’s not fair to dismiss her due to circumstances under her control. She didn’t choose her life, but she is here now and she should be allowed to continue”.. said Prince Ugonna.
King Obidike anger boiled over, “Ugonna! I don’t want this girl in the contest, a commoner like her can’t be found here!.. said King Obidike.
Prince Ugonna calmly replied, “That’s my choice to make, Father. You are not the one picking a bride. She isn’t contesting to be your bride, so let her be, please..

King Obidike’s fury reached its peak, and he ordered, “You all can leave!!.
As the room emptied, Queen Akugo walked up to Prince Ugonna.
King Obidike rose from his throne, his face stern with anger. He cast a scathing glance at Prince Ugonna and Queen Akugo before storming out of the room.

“Don’t mind your father’s reaction.. You did the right thing”.. said Queen Akugo as she rubbed Prince Ugonna’s shoulder.
“Father was harsh on her. It’s not her fault she was born a commoner. I expect father to understand that”.. said Prince Ugonna.
Queen Akugo nodded in understanding and shook her head.
“I will leave to my Chamber”.. said Prince Ugonna as he excused himself.

As Omasirachi and other maidens returned to their quarters, Anwulika grabbed Omasirachi’s arm.
“Let go off me!” Omasirachi yelled at Anwulika.
Anwulika retaliated “How dare you yelled at me you low life! You are just poor breed who managed to find herself in the contest for the prince. No wonder you didn’t reply me when I was asked about your family. Anwulika said.
Omasirachi snubbed Anwulika and walked past her.
Anwulika grabbed her again saying, “ I see you have some pride.

The Chief maid intervened, “What’s going on here?”
It’s nothing… Anwulika responded and left the scene.
Omasirachi followed suit.

That night, as Omasirachi lay down, she became lost in her thought.
She recalled how Prince Ugonna had kindly intervened to prevent her from being kicked out of the contest.
“I know I’m not okay with this contest; because that’s not the reason why am here. But I think I have to comply and act accordingly because King Obidike doesn’t want me here. Winning this contest is the only way to stay in the palace.. Omasirachi thought to herself.

In the morning, The Chief maid summoned the maidens and they appeared before the Queen Akugo. Queen announced, “Today, a task will be given to each maiden. You will spend time with the Prince on different occasion”..
The maidens was excited to hear the announcement.
“How long will a maiden spend with the Prince?” Anwulika asked.
“Each maiden will spend three days with the Prince”.. The Queen replied
“Does that mean we can spend nights with the prince during these three days?” A maiden asked.
Queen Akugo clarified, “
“No, you will return to your quarters in the evening”.. Queen Akugo replied.
The maidens acknowledge, “Okay my Queen”.

The selection process began, and every three days a maidens would spend time with Prince Ugonna. When it was Omasirachi’s turn, she dressed nicely and went to the Prince’s chamber.
Omasirachi was determined to win the Prince heart, so as to remain in the palace.

When Omasirachi got to the Prince chamber, they had few discussion about themselves.
“Instead of mopping at each other, why don’t we do something else… Omasirachi said.
“Something like what? Prince Ugonna asked.
“ I can teach you some craft work, like how to make a basket. Omasirachi responded.
Prince Ugonna showed interest, “ That sound nice, I would love to make one..

The servants provided the necessary items for basket making.
Omasirachi guided the Prince on how to make a basket.
Prince Ugonna was happy to learn something new. He followed Omasirachi’s instructions closely, watching her make her own basket as he replicate her steps.

After several attempts and failures, Prince Ugonna finally succeeded in making a basket.
Omasirachi applauded him, and he beamed with pride, happy with accomplishment.

As the day drew to a close, Omasirachi prepared to leave, “My prince, It’s getting late, I will return tomorrow during the day..
“I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow”. “Thanks for today”.. said Prince Ugonna.
Omasirachi bowed to the Prince and took her leave, leaving him with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for their next encounter.

EPISODE 20

Omasirachi's time with the Prince came to an end, and Anwulika's turn began. Anwulika excitedly went to the Prince's chamber, eager to impress him.
During her stay, Anwulika tried to force her affections on the Prince, but he rebuked her. "Don't you have any dignity left?" Prince Ugonna shouted, annoyed by her advances.

Anwulika confessed her feelings and continued her seduction attempts, but Prince Ugonna grew angry and ordered her out of his chamber. "But my Prince, I'm supposed to stay with you until evening," Anwulika protested.
"I said leave my chamber!" Prince Ugonna shouted, his patience exhausted.

Anwulika hastily departed, but returned the next day, only to be barred from entering the Prince's chamber by the guards. "The Prince doesn't wish to see you. Leave now," the guard said firmly.
Anwulika argued, "But I'm here as instructed by the Queen, and I still have two days to spend with him."
The guard remained resolute, ignoring her pleas and standing firm with a stern expression.

Anwulika stood outside the Prince's chamber for an hour, but was unable to gain access. She returned to Queen Akugo, furious, and reported the incident.
Queen Akugo advised, "If the Prince doesn't wish to see you, it's due to your actions, and it will only harm your chances of winning the contest."

"If I can't win the Prince's heart, no one will." Anwulika muttered to herself.

Meanwhile, the maidens were discussing and playing when the Prince's guard arrived, summoning Omasirachi.
"The Prince requests your presence,".. said The guard.

Omasirachi left with the guard, prompting the maidens to whisper among themselves. "What just happened? Did the Prince send for Omasirachi?" A maiden asked.
"Is he developing feelings for her?" Another wondered.

Anwulika fumed in anger, overhearing the maidens' whispers.

Omasirachi entered the Prince's chamber, bowing and asking, "My Prince, did you send for me?"
Prince Ugonna replied, "Yes, come have a seat. I missed your company and want to practice what you taught me."
Omasirachi chuckled, "Let's see if you're now an expert."

After spending time together, crafting and chatting, Omasirachi returned to the quarters at night, leaving Prince Ugonna with a pleasant impression.

As Omasirachi approached her quarters, Anwulika suddenly pulled her back, causing Omasirachi to scream in fear, unsure of who was lurking in the darkness. When the moonlight revealed Anwulika's face, Omasirachi exclaimed, "Anwulika!..."

Anwulika demanded, "Why are you returning so late? What were you doing with the Prince?"
Omasirachi retorted, "And how is that your business? What are you to the Prince?"

Anwulika's expression turned venomous, but Omasirachi dismissed her, hissing and walking into her quarters.

Anwulika appeared distressed, lost in thought as she wondered about Omasirachi's meeting with the Prince, her mind racing with jealousy and suspicion.

Anwulika and Prince Ugonna's frequent meetings sparked jealousy and gossip among the other maidens.

Queen Akugo assembled the maidens and granted them the permission to visit their families.

Anwulika returned home, tears streaming down her face as she confided in her mother about her fear of losing the Prince to Omasirachi, a commoner.

Her mother comforted her and promised to meet with King Obidike on her behalf. Anwulika felt relieved, thinking her mother's influence would help her win the contest.

Chief Okezie, Anwulika's father, entered the room, noticing the happy atmosphere. "What's behind your joy, mother and daughter?" he asked.

Anwulika tried to brush it off, but Chief Okezie pressed for an answer.
"I want to speak with King Obidike to ensure our daughter doesn't lose the contest to that commoner, Omasirachi," Anwulika's mother revealed.

Chief Okezie frowned, "You're not going to meet the King. This is a contest, and if Anwulika wants to be the Prince's bride, she must win fairly, not by seeking favor from the King."

Anwulika tried to protest, but Chief Okezie sternly interrupted, "Do not argue with me, Anwulika!"

TO BE CONTINUE.
