… Outside the room his neighbour, Kayode was already up, pouring water from a yellow bucket into a smaller one. The splashing echoed against the bare walls. The sharp smell of Morning Fresh soap filled the environment.
Christian rubbed his eyes.
“I’ll pray in the bathroom,” he told himself quietly. “Or maybe while walking to class. It’s a long trek to the lecture theatre anyway. I’ll just plug in my earphones so people think I’m listening to music.”
It was a shortcut many Nigerian students knew too well. Prayer squeezed between movements. A quick whisper while walking. Something small, something manageable.
To Christian it felt reasonable. After all, he had been doing well recently. Heaven had liked his posts. The angels had left glowing comments under his acts of obedience. Somewhere deep down he felt like he had gathered enough spiritual credit to skip a proper morning sync once in a while.
He got out of bed, pulled on a checkered shirt that deserved more ironing than it received, and slung his bag over his shoulder.
Outside the hostel the morning air was already warming up. Students hurried past with notebooks tucked under their arms, the campus slowly waking into its usual noise.
As Christian stepped onto the pathway, the Spirit Interface chimed again. This time the sound was sharper.
The notification blinked in front of him.
