As a concerned citizen, I am compelled to draw attention to the pressing issues plaguing our basic education system. It is imperative that we acknowledge the critical role education plays in shaping the future of our nation.
Basic education, being the initiating stage, requires urgent attention. I strongly advocate for State Governments to invest more in education, recognizing its transformative potential.
To address the challenges faced by basic education teachers, I propose the following:
1. Special Salary Structure: Implement a special salary structure for basic education teachers to prevent them from seeking better-paying opportunities elsewhere.
2. Remove Politics from Education: Depoliticize the education sector to upgrade the status of basic education teachers.
3. Increased Overhead Allowance: Provide basic schools with increased overhead allowances to facilitate effective management.
4. Training Workshops: Organize regular training workshops to enhance the capacity of basic education teachers.
Furthermore, I suggest the following initiatives:
1. Adopt Gas for Cooking: Introduce the use of gas for cooking in boarding secondary schools to reduce the risks associated with firewood.
2. School Buses: Provide school buses for students and staff to ensure safe and convenient transportation.
3. Traditional Rulers as Ceremonial Principals: Assign Traditional Rulers as ceremonial principals to schools within their domains, leveraging their influence to promote education.
As recently emphasized by the former Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Muazu Babangida Aliyu (Talban Minna), approximately 50% of our teachers are not adequately qualified. This underscores the need for urgent reforms.
I urge the government, policymakers, and stakeholders to join forces in revitalizing our basic education system. Together, we can create a brighter future for our children and our nation.
