The Nigerian government has officially released Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive who was detained on money laundering charges. Gambaryan, who had been held for nearly eight months, was freed after the charges were dropped and has since left the country. His release comes after a review of the case, where the government cited international and diplomatic considerations as factors in discontinuing the prosecution against him.
A prosecutor from Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission stated in court that the decision to release Gambaryan was influenced by his status as an employee of Binance Holdings Limited, which plays a more significant role in the matter.
Gambaryan’s health had deteriorated during his detention, leading to his release on humanitarian grounds. He is now en route to the U.S. to receive medical treatment after suffering from malaria, pneumonia, and other complications while imprisoned. His wife, Yuki Gambaryan, who had campaigned for his release, expressed immense relief, calling the past eight months a "living nightmare."
While Gambaryan has been freed, Binance continues to face two ongoing legal battles in Nigeria: one for money laundering and another for tax evasion.
