Festivals in Nigeria are like polical rallies where the ground get to feel the trampling of diverse feet and Rhythmic dances.

Our culture, spoken and written language, food, attire, music, games, dance and craft are some of the major features expressed during our traditional festivals.

Some of the festivals celebrated im Nigeria include:

1. Argungu Fishing Festival:
As the name implies this festival is a four-day event celebrated by the peoples of kebbawa, Argungu, Kebbi State. The festival is celebrated in February to culminate the close of the farming season and the beginning of the fishing season.

The fishing competition is held in the Matta fadan River where the individual or group who catches the largest size of fish will be reward.

Fun fact: The Argungu Fishing Festival was dates back to the 1930s and was originally meant to celebrate the end of the war between two kingdoms

2. The Calabar Carnival
Established by Donald Duke, former governor of Cross-River, Calabar State, the Calabar Carnival is one of those highly-anticipated Nigerian festivals that almost every Nigerian looks forward to each year. It is normally held annually in December, and celebrated few days into Christmas festivity. The beauty and artistry of African culture via colorful costumes, arts, and music are the hallmark of this renowed event.

Other features hoste during the Calabar Carnival include street parade, football tournament, beauty pageants, amongst many others

3. New yam Festival:
The new yam festival is a traditional festival common in the eastern part of Nigeria, particularly within the igbo tribe and takes place at the end of the rainy season to celebrate the conclusion of the harvest period and its rewards.

An interesting feature of this festival is the fact that few days to the festival, all yam tubers and crops from the previous harvest year are consumed or discarded, paving the way for fresh and more fruitful yield of thier crops for the next season.
