The building itself is a piece of history. Originally constructed as a government office during the colonial era, it served various administrative functions before being repurposed as an art gallery. In 1995, it was declared a national monument, and in 1997, it was handed over to the National Museums of Kenya. Following renovations, the gallery officially opened its doors to the public in 2005.
