Anabel left Kenny behind, traveling to Japan to escape her heartache. She immersed herself in the language and culture, finding solace in the beauty of the country. She met a kind-hearted Japanese man, Taro, and they fell deeply in love.
As I sat across from Taro on our first date, he smiled and said: "Anata wa utsukushii desu ne?" [You are beautiful.]
I looked at him, confused, and replied: "Huh? I don't understand." (Anabel said:)
Taro laughed and said: "Sumimasen, watashi wa anata no kokoro o tsukamu tame ni ganbarou to omotte imasu." [Sorry, I'll try harder to capture your heart.]
I blushed, feeling a spark of connection.
Fast forward 17 years, I returned to France with my family. One day, I decided to visit a quaint coffee shop and found Kenny, my past love, behind the counter.
"Anabel! Long time no see!" (Kenny said:)
"Kenny! I didn't know you owned a coffee shop!" (Anabel said:)
We hugged, and I apologized for leaving him without a word. Kenny forgave me, and we decided to be friends.
As we caught up, my mum and sister were still hooked on romance movies, swooning over fictional characters. I laughed, remembering my own past heartaches and the journey that led me to where I was today.
Mum: Stop yelling 'Kiss him!' at the TV, it's just a movie!
Sister: But why didn't he propose to her with a flash mob?! That's what I want!
Sister: And why doesn't he have a six-pack?! I want a man with a six-pack!
Anabel: I face-palmed, laughing. You two are impossible. No wonder I ended up with a Japanese husband who speaks no English!
Taro: Ai shiteru, Anabel-chan. [I love you, Anabel.]
Mum: Ooh, he's so romantic! Can we keep him?
Sister: Yeah, can we adopt him?!
Anabel: No, you cannot adopt my husband!
