My mom taught me the "envelope system" for cash, but she did it in a way that made me almost scared to spend anything. Every paycheck, she'd divide cash into envelopes labeled "groceries," "gas," "bills," "savings," and a tiny one for "fun." She never touched the fun envelope, even when we were scraping by. I picked that up as a young adult and went way overboard -- I'd hoard cash in envelopes under my mattress, avoiding necessary expenses like replacing worn-out shoes or fixing my car until it broke down. It took me years to realize I was treating money like a scarce resource that could vanish any second, which kept me from using it wisely.

The good habit I'm grateful for is my dad's rule about buying cars. He always paid cash for used cars that were five to seven years old with solid maintenance records. When I bought my first car at 22, he helped me find a 10-year-old Honda Civic with 90,000 miles. I paid $3,000 and drove it for another eight years. That single habit has probably saved me over $20,000 in car payments and interest compared to my friends who finance new vehicles.

It's a balance, though. I still struggle with the scarcity mindset from my mom's method, but I've learned to set a clear "yes, spend this" amount each month for things like a nice dinner or a tool I actually need. It's not natural for me, but I force myself to use that money.

Damn the car thing hits hard. My dad did the same with Toyotas and I drove my first one until the transmission literally fell out on the highway lol. But honestly that scarcity mindset from the envelopes is real. I still catch myself not buying stuff I actually need and then feeling guilty when I finally do. It's like you gotta unlearn the fear as an adult which is way harder than just learning it right the first time.
