Chapter 3
I stood in the kitchen for a long time lost in my thoughts. After what seemed like forever, I finally concluded on what to do. I will make the house uncomfortable for Dare until he increases the money he gives me monthly for the upkeep of the home. Even though I don't see the result now, I'm certain that I will get it in the coming month.
I smiled at my wonderful conclusion but I suddenly paused when I thought about my children.
*How are they going to take it?* I asked myself silently. Then I remembered Rita's words. Should I continue to collect the peanut Dare has been giving me for the sake of my children? What if he is spending the rest of his money on a side-chick? I asked myself.
But the Dare I know, is not a flirt. However, people change, right? Dare can also change.
No! I won't allow the love for my children deprive me from getting my right from Dare, my husband. I thought with determination.
All through that day, I kept to myself. I didn't even interact with the children like before. I also avoided taking lunch and dinner with them. I just dished the food for them and excused myself to the kitchen.
That night, I didn't join them for the family night devotion. I just told them to go on without me because I'm very busy. They did that and the children went to bed.
" Honey, what's all this you are doing? I thought we agreed to keep the children out of our marital problems," Dare said with his voice slightly raised as soon as he met me in the kitchen.
" Did I call them to discuss our problems with them or did I discuss our problems in their presence?" I asked Dare angrily.
"No , you didn't. But they are beginning to notice that we are having problems," Dare said calmly.
" Then let them notice. I don't care anymore," I yelled angrily.
" What happened to the promise we made to each other to keep our children out of our marital problems?" Dare asked calmly.
" You know what to do if you want peace in this house," I told Dare firmly.
" Why are you behaving like you don't know how much I'm earning from my job?" Dare asked in frustration.
" So, you want to tell me that the two hundred thousand naira you told was your salary five years ago, is what you are still earning?" I asked Dare angrily.
" You know if there is any change in my salary, I will tell you," Dare said calmly.
" Even if it's two hundred thousand naira you are receiving as salary, why can't you give one hundred and fifty thousand naira for the upkeep of the house? I asked angrily. Dare looked at me in shock.
" I give you half of my salary for the upkeep of the house while I keep half. Mind you, from the half, I pay my tithe, the utility bill, children's school fees and also buy fuel for our car to ease my transportation," Dare explained calmly. But I was not having it
" It's either you increase the money you give me for the upkeep of the house or I will make this house uncomfortable for you," I told Dare angrily. I made to walk past him but I paused.
" And until you increase the money for the upkeep of the house, you should be ready to do all the chores in the house," I told Dare firmly before leaving him in the kitchen.
