Mwea National Reserve, established in 1976, is a 42 km² protected area located in Embu County, Kenya. Situated at the confluence of the Tana and Thiba Rivers, it offers a unique blend of savannah and riverine ecosystems, making it a haven for diverse wildlife and bird species.
Wildlife and Birdlife
The reserve is home to a variety of animals, including African elephants, Rothschild giraffes, lesser kudus, buffaloes, waterbucks, bushbucks, impalas, and common zebras. Notably, it shelters over 200 bird species, earning it the status of an Important Bird Area (IBA). Rare species such as the Hinde’s babbler, Pel’s fishing owl, and white-backed night heron can be spotted here .

Conservation Efforts
In recent years, the elephant population in the reserve has surged, leading to overcrowding. In October 2024, Kenya Wildlife Service undertook a significant conservation effort by relocating 50 elephants to the larger Aberdare National Park to alleviate pressure on the reserve's ecosystem and reduce human-wildlife conflict .

The reserve is open year-round, with the dry season (June to October) being particularly favorable for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities.
