Most people think of game reserves or dramatic landscapes when they picture Africa, but the place that hit me hardest was actually the old town of Lamu, Kenya. It’s a tiny island off the coast, and there are no cars there at all. Everyone gets around by donkey or by foot. The streets are so narrow you can touch both walls at once, and the whole town is built from coral stone and mangrove poles.
What made it beautiful to me wasn’t just the visual thing, which is stunning in its own right with the whitewashed buildings and the turquoise channels. It was the silence. At dusk, when the call to prayer echoes from the old mosques and the dhows come back into the harbor with their sails catching the last light, the whole place feels suspended in time. I sat on the rooftop of my guesthouse one evening eating fresh grilled fish and watching the sun sink behind the mangrove forests. My guide, a local named Ali, told me that his grandfather had sat on the same rooftop watching the same sunset 70 years ago. That continuity, that peace, that’s the kind of beauty you don’t find in a photo.
If you go, stay in the old town, not the beach resorts. Hire a dhow for a day trip to the nearby sandbar at low tide. Bring cash because nobody takes cards. And don’t expect luxury - expect authenticity. That’s the real beauty.
