Perched in the vibrant village of Triolet, Maheswarnath Mandir, locally known as the “Grand Shivala,” is the largest and one of the oldest Hindu temples in Mauritius. Founded in 1888 by Pandit Shri Sanjibonlall Ramsoondur from Calcutta, this striking white temple exemplifies Bengal-style architecture with its domes and intricate floral motifs, reflecting a rich blend of Indian and Mauritian artistry .

At its heart stands a revered Shiva Linga, flanked by shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Nandi the bull, Ganesh, Kartikeya, and other deities. Inside the expansive complex, smaller temples pay homage to Vishnu, Hanuman, Durga, and Natraja—each corner echoing vibrant spiritual life and architectural finesse .

Beyond its beauty, the temple holds deep historical importance: in 1898, Pandit Sanjibonlall led the first pilgrimage from this Mandir to Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), bringing sacred water for Maha Shivaratri rituals—a founding act of a national tradition still observed today . Legend even tells of buried pirate treasure funding its construction, adding layers of myth to its legacy .
