Craft is quintessentially the production of an item that requires skill or technical knowhow. As africans crafts, our craft is our unique way of expresing creativity, participation in modern and primitive art, a testament to diligence and honor of labour, and as much as our historical journey.
The myriads of mind blowing works crafted by Africans prior to civilization may be expressed through diverse means including basketry, jewellery, metalworks, textiles, pottery, beads, carving and sculpture of mediums.
Despite obvious advancement in the industrial era - our craftsmanship stands aloof and tall. It's not always about the complexity, but most times the simplicity and uniqueness in each craft.
It's pertinent to know the each craft serves as a witness, a memorial revealing the profound connection between the people and the land.
1. Basketry: The Senegelase coil basket, Zulu Basket (South Africa), Binga Baskets (Zimbabwe), Rwenzori Baskets (Uganda), Bantu Baskets (Somalia) are all testaments of handmade crafts handed down from generation to generation preserving cultural heritage in simple but beautiful utensils.
2.Pottery: African pottery could be caption in these simple words, "from earth to art." It's our tool and vessel for storage. In Nigeria the Late potter Ladi Kwalli was the first African to gain international recognition for her amazing works and design in turning earth to art.
In honor our her, Nigeria imprinted her craft upon the 20 Naira denomination of its currency. In recent pottery has evolved as seen in the design from Zimbabwean Malian, South African and Nigeria models.
In the next post, we'll look at Africa crafts expressed through, textiles, sculptures, metalworks and carving.
