Salute to You, Single Moms
It started like a lie,
then became a reality needing no convincing.
"He's gone," I yelled at you, "It was your fault!"
Hopes dashed, childhood dreams destroyed.
You grieved—love and hate tangled in your heart,
a silent war between your mind and soul.
But there was me.
You couldn’t hate me for his sins—or mine.
I remember how you held me at night,
your tears falling, a quiet storm of hurt and healing.
I heard your whispers, "Lord, what am I going to do?"
Soft kisses on my cheeks betrayed your strength—
you loved me, Mom, and that was all I needed to feel.
4 a.m. alarms, three jobs, and me to juggle—
through subways, buses, and endless days.
Your beauty never faded, even beneath the weight of it all.
Underneath your makeup, I saw the lines in your eyes—
maps of struggle, exhaustion, and a superhero’s resolve.
You paid the bills, my music classes, my sports, my tuition...
I wished I were grown, strong enough to carry it all for you.
And what about the nights I fell sick?
The flu, the fever—you never slept.
Even when I battled my own demons, you never gave up.
Doctors, meds, rehabs, and your shoulder to cry on, Ma.
I still hear your words:
"My son isn’t a quitter, and you know why?
Because his mama isn’t one."
