Nestled within the serene woodlands of Chitambo District, Zambia, the Livingstone Memorial stands as a poignant tribute to Scottish missionary and explorer Dr. David Livingstone. It marks the exact location where he passed away on May 1, 1873, during his relentless quest to map the rivers feeding into the Bangweulu wetlands. This site not only commemorates his final moments but also symbolizes the enduring connection between Livingstone and the African continent.
🕯️ A Site of Reverence and Reflection
Upon his death, Livingstone's loyal attendants, Chuma and Susi, embalmed his body and embarked on an arduous 1,500-kilometer journey to transport it to the Tanzanian coast for repatriation to England. However, they chose to bury his heart beneath a mpundu (wild plum) tree at the site of his demise, signifying his profound love for Africa. An inscription carved into the tree read "LIVINGSTONE MAY 4 1873," accompanied by the names of his attendants.
In 1902, a 6-meter-high obelisk was erected on this sacred spot, adorned with bronze plaques detailing Livingstone's life and legacy. A bronze cross crowns the monument, and a descendant of the original mpundu tree still stands nearby, offering a living connection to the past.

Location: Approximately 26 kilometers off the Mansa Road, near Chief Chitambo's Palace in Chitambo District, Zambia.
Access: From the Serenje-Samfya highway, take the turn-off near Chalilo village and follow the gravel road leading to the memorial. Signage is available, but hiring local transportation is advisable due to the remote location.
Facilities: The site offers basic amenities, including clean ablution blocks and a campsite equipped with flush toilets, cold showers, and firewood. Camping is permitted, with donations accepted as payment.
