LESSONS FROM A BLINKING CURSOR

It was 2 a.m., and Sarah was still staring at her laptop. The cursor blinked at her, taunting her with its silence. She had spent the past two hours overthinking the perfect way to start her article. Nothing felt right.

Frustrated, she did what any logical person would do—she shut her laptop and went to raid the fridge. As she chewed on cold jollof rice, an odd thought crossed her mind. What if the article started with a question? A simple, thought-provoking question.

She rushed back to her laptop, typed the question, and suddenly, everything started flowing. It wasn’t perfect, but it existed. And that was enough.

Sarah learned something that night—the hardest part of writing (or anything, really) isn’t finishing. It’s starting. That first step always feels like climbing a mountain, but once you take it, the rest finds its way.

And this doesn’t just apply to writing. We hesitate before launching projects, starting businesses, or making decisions, waiting for the “perfect” moment. But perfection is a myth. The biggest breakthroughs come when we simply start, no matter how rough it looks.

So, if you’re staring at your version of a blank page today—whether it’s a career move, a business idea, or a personal goal—just start. You can refine as you go. But you can’t refine what doesn’t exist.
