Kunle Afolayan gave us something rare with Anikulapo: a Nollywood film that operates entirely on its own mythology with complete confidence in that mythology.
Kunle Remi as Saro, a cloth trader in ancient Yorubaland, is killed and brought back to life by the mystical Akalamagbo bird. He is given a gourd that holds the power of life and death. What he does with that power - and what it does to him - is where the film becomes something profound.
Bimbo Ademoye as Arolake is a revelation. Her performance holds the entire emotional architecture of the story. She is not a supporting character in a man's journey. She is the engine of the film's moral reckoning.
Afolayan frames ancient Yoruba life without romanticism or condescension. The world breathes. The costumes, the language, the rituals - all handled with the care of a filmmaker who loves the culture rather than merely using it.
Rating: 9.5/10. The finest Nollywood film of 2022. Full stop.
