Located just 5 kilometers north of Cyangugu town in the Rusizi District, Kamembe International Airport (IATA: KME) is the key entry point for travelers exploring Rwanda’s western region. Serving both domestic and regional flights, it offers convenient access to stunning destinations like Lake Kivu and Nyungwe Forest National Park.

The airport features a single asphalt runway measuring 1,500 meters, capable of handling small to medium-sized aircraft. It has one terminal that accommodates passenger arrivals and departures smoothly. RwandAir operates daily flights connecting Kamembe with Kigali, while occasional charter flights link this gateway to neighboring countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kamembe underwent a major upgrade in 2014 that included terminal improvements and runway reinforcement, boosting its capacity and safety standards. Additional modernizations like weather monitoring systems and enhanced lighting have made it more reliable for passengers and airlines alike.

Travelers arriving or departing from Kamembe can easily find taxis, ride-hailing services, and car rentals for transport around the region. Nearby accommodations range from the cozy Stipp Hotel Gisovu, only 1.3 km away, to the luxurious Lake Kivu Serena Hotel about 23 km from the airport.

This airport not only connects visitors to Rwanda’s breathtaking western landscapes but also plays a vital role in cross-border trade with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making it a hub for both tourism and commerce.

Visitor Tips: Arrive at least two hours before your domestic flight to allow time for check-in and security. Carry some Rwandan Francs for small expenses, as card acceptance can be limited. The western region enjoys a tropical climate, so light, breathable clothing is recommended. If you’re traveling internationally, ensure your yellow fever vaccination certificate is up to date.

Kamembe International Airport opens the door to some of Rwanda’s most beautiful natural treasures, blending accessibility with a warm regional welcome.
