Kakamega Forest, located in western Kenya, is a captivating reminder of the country’s lush, unspoiled wilderness. Once part of the great Congo Basin rainforest, it is Kenya’s only tropical rainforest, offering visitors an immersive experience into a world of diverse flora, fauna, and culture. Covering an area of about 230 square kilometers, the forest is often called the "Jewel of Western Kenya."

Home to more than 400 species of birds, including the endangered Turner’s Eremomela, Kakamega is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The forest’s wildlife also includes a variety of monkeys, butterflies, and rare plants that thrive in its humid, sheltered environment. Kakamega’s rich biodiversity is complemented by its unique role in local folklore and culture, with many communities living around it depending on it for sustenance and inspiration.

Among the forest’s most distinctive features are the rivers, waterfalls, and tranquil trails that wind through it. Visitors can explore the forest by hiking along its well-maintained paths, discovering hidden caves, and experiencing the forest’s serenity. A visit to the nearby Lirhanda Hill adds a spiritual layer to the experience, as it is an important cultural site for the local communities.

Visitor Tip:
Wear comfortable hiking shoes for the muddy trails and bring binoculars for birdwatching. It’s best to visit with a guide, as they’ll share insights into the forest’s rich history and hidden gems.
