Perched in the undulating hills of Kabale District in southwestern Uganda, the Kabale Regional Museum is a cultural time capsule dedicated to the traditions, history, and heritage of the Kigezi sub-region. Originally housed in a former Hindu temple vacated during the 1972 expulsion of Asians, the museum was closed in 2007, later rebuilt, and finally reopened in 2014 with a renewed mission to preserve the legacy of the Bakiga and neighboring communities.

The museum showcases ethnographic and archaeological exhibits that chronicle everything from pre-colonial migration stories and political structures to traditional music, farming tools, and clothing. Highlights include the iconic Kikiga stool—a symbol of authority and identity—and displays that explore marriage customs, local governance, indigenous cuisine, and the economic transitions of the Kigezi region.

Visitor Tips:

Combine your visit with a trip to Lake Bunyonyi or the Bakiga Cultural Museum.

Visit in May for International Museum Day events.

Engage with curators to learn about the meaning behind each exhibit.
