Hello Cape Town,
From a distance we've heard the tales of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Arts Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) domiciled in Cape town, South Africa.
Wikipedia records that the Zeitz MOCAA opened on September 22, 2017 as a non-profit organization and also doubles as the largest museum of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.
Location:
The museum is located in the Silo District at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town.
Architecture of the Zeitz MOCAA :
The museum building was constructed from the conversion of the 57m tall historic grain silo, originally built between 1921 and 1924 by indentured labourers. The architects, Heatherwick Studio, maintained the original structure's industrial heritage ad they carved multiple galleries across the large atrium
The remaining concrete shafts excavated from the high-standing silos were capped with strengthened glass in order to allow natural light to enter and create a "cathedral-like" interior.
From the exterior, the most noticeable change to the original structure was the addition of pillowed glass panels in the building's upper floors.
Awards and Recognition:
The building honored to be featured in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International List back in 2018.
Additionally, the museum’s galleries feature temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection. The institution also includes the Centre for Art Education, a fellowship programme, an atelier artist residency, a retail shop, a hotel, a rooftop restaurant, and a coffee shop.
