Hello Mali Neigbours,

Africa has amazing history echoing through various streams in time. One way we've learnt to preserve our heritage, story and culture is through. Much would have been lost if not for Museums that serve our history's guardian.

Museums like the Musée National du Mali located in Bamako, the capital city of Mali has helped in preserving historical art works. This museum was opened in 1953 as the Sudanese Museum and was dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage and history based in Mali.

The museum was established by the former president Alpha Oumar Konaré, supported by State legislation and actively implemented by museum director Samuel Sidibé, the museum is involved in activities to raise awareness and encourage people to protect their heritage.

The National Museum of Mali has a superb collection of over 6,000 objects and plays an important role in preserving and interpreting the country’s aesthetic heritage.

It has important collections of musical heritage, ceramics and textiles, and the museum has facilitated the exchange of professionals for restoration of ancient textiles and architectural sites.

The museum is also involved in promoting the production of contemporary plastic arts, organising periodic exhibits of artists' work from both Mali and abroad, including exhibitions such as ‘Time and Space: Contemporary cultures of West Africa: shifts and continuity’.

The museum is filled with various artistic works from a variety of countries, from Africa and beyond, including Iba N’Diaye (Senegal), Outtara Bakari (Côte d’Ivoire), Koraïchi Rachid (Algeria), Malangatana (Mozambique) and Boghossian Skunder (Ethiopia).

The museum regularly presents portions of the Bamako Biennale for Photography along with other temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
