Hello Neighbors,
Featuring on today's edition of the Discover Africa experience, we will be looking at ancient colonial structures spread across Africa. One of such countries we'll be considering in West Africa is Senegal.
Senagal is a francophone (french speaking) country with Dakar as its capital. Despite the countries development in Infrastructure and architecture, there still remains a remnant of colonial architecture spread across it.
Let's take a quick look at some of them:
1. Dakar Central Train Station: This colonial building was completed in 1914 for the Dakar-Niger railway line and the Saint-Louis line.
2.Chamber of Commerce: built in 1926.
3.Kermel Market: Built in 1910 by Charles Pleyber, this market was meant to be used by the entire urban population. It was destroyed by fire in 1993 but rebuilt in 1997.
4.City Hall
5.Institut d’Hygiène Sociale: Designed by Henry Adenot around 1932
There should've been more however, some of the buildings deteriorated due to humidity, termites, and the cost of importing quality building materials to refurbish them.
Additionally, Senegal holds world records for two massive structures which are the National Theatre (the largest in Africa) and the Museum of Black Civilisation
Care to see these ancient structures built by the French colonist, visit Dakar, Senegal to have a new feel of the old.
