I've visited the Grand River South East Waterfall a few times, and while the boat ride and the falls themselves are stunning, there's something most people miss that makes it even better. If you go during the right season, usually after heavy rainfall from December to March, the waterfall is absolutely roaring. The volume of water crashing down is incredible, and the mist from the falls creates a cool, refreshing atmosphere even on the hottest days. But the trick is timing. I'd recommend going early in the morning, around 8 or 9 AM, when the tour boats haven't started crowding the area. You'll have the place almost to yourself, and the light is perfect for seeing the dramatic contrast between the dark volcanic rock and the bright green vegetation.

One practical tip that I never see mentioned: bring a waterproof bag for your phone or camera. The boat ride can get bumpy near the river mouth, and the spray from the falls is surprisingly strong. I learned that the hard way when my phone got soaked. Also, don't skip the short walk along the riverbank after the boat drops you off. There's a small trail that leads to a viewpoint above the falls. It's a bit overgrown, but the view from up there is completely different from the standard boat perspective. You can see the waterfall plunging directly into the ocean, which is a rare thing to see anywhere in Mauritius. Wear sturdy shoes for that trail though, it's slippery when wet.

Ugh I wish I'd seen this before I went last year! Got absolutely soaked trying to take a video on the boat ride lol. That waterproof bag tip is gold. Also had no idea there was a trail up top - definitely doing that next time. Is the path easy to find from where the boat drops you off or do you kinda have to hunt for it?
