I’ve spent quite a few weekends at the Botswana National Stadium, not just for big concerts or national celebrations, but for the smaller local athletics meets that happen when nobody’s watching. There’s a feeling you get standing on those concrete stands when the sun starts to dip and the floodlights flicker on. It’s raw energy. The track itself has seen some serious history, but what sticks with me is how the stadium becomes a meeting point for families from all over Gaborone, from Old Naledi to Phakalane.

One thing people don’t always mention is how the stadium’s location on Notwane Road makes it a logistical anchor for the city. If you’re coming from Tlokweng or even further out, it’s the main landmark you’ll use to navigate. And during big events like the Maitisong Festival or national football matches, the whole area comes alive with street vendors selling fat cakes and grilled meat. The smell alone is enough to make you hungry. But the infrastructure is aging. The seats are hard and the bathrooms can be a nightmare during packed events. If you’re planning to attend something, bring cash and arrive early to avoid the parking chaos.
