I’ve shot over two hundred weddings, but this moment stopped me cold.

The bride’s grandmother landed from Lagos the night before. Flight delayed eight hours, luggage lost, no sleep. She was supposed to rest but instead sat in the front row with a handkerchief already out before the processional started.

When the doors opened and Kehinde stepped into the light in her mother’s lace, the old woman let out a sound that wasn’t quite a sob. It was a release. Twenty years since she’d watched her own daughter walk an aisle. Now this.

She cried through every vow. Through the ring exchange. Through the kiss. The groom’s mother kept offering tissues. She just waved her hand and kept dabbing her own eyes with that same handkerchief.

After the ceremony I found her with Kehinde’s hands in hers. “Are you okay, Mama?” someone asked. She laughed through leftover tears. “These are happy tears. I flew across an ocean to cry happy tears.”

I raised my camera. She looked up, face still wet, and smiled like she’d just won something.

Every time someone asks if black love matters, I remember that smile.

this got me right in the chest. my grandma kept a handkerchief in her bra for every family wedding and i swear she never once made it through a ceremony with dry eyes. that photo of her smiling with her face all wet?? that's the whole point right there. generations of love showing up anyway, even after an 8 hour delay and no sleep. you captured something so real here.
